So I have the chance to get a brand new Kenwood (forget the model number) head unit with subwoofer control and iPod in for $90.

Is it a worthy replacement for my aging Pioneer DEH-P3500?

i've had a kenwood headunit for about 3 4 years now and i love it. I've always trusted kenwood i also had a 1000watt amp to boost a JL that i also wish i still had.. my suggestion is to go for it.

Without knowing what Model Kenwood, it is impossible to say. Pioneer, in my opinion, is a much better company when it comes to car audio, but if you want the iPod and Sub controls and don't have it on the current Pioneer, then an upgrade may be good for that price.

I like the sound out of my Kenwood better than the Pioneer stereos I considered, but, when it comes to interface and ease of use, Kenwood seems to be clueless...

the nice thing about Excellon Kenwood HU's is the built in cross-over for total sub control. on top of that, you can control the frequencies to each speaker so they don't blow. take out all the bass going to the 6" speakers out if you have a sub running. it's awesome!
i've had 3 now. why 3? the stupid flipping face burns out the thin wires that light the face. then why buy 3? there's nothing better out there with the build in cross-over for the $$$. my 3rd one is dieing now, i'll make the trip up to the factory store on 85 after the holidays to replace it. now, this is my 3rd one in 3 cars over the last 10 years...
if it's an Excelon model you'll be happy with all the control. you are a subi nerd, now.

I tend to like the kenwoods better. Personally, i am looking at an onkyo 905 but the funds are not there. Good luck choosing :)

Honestly, Alpine is overpriced crap. My first HU was Alpine and I will never buy one again.

I've had nothing but luck with them. I'm on my 2nd one, due to the first one being stoled out of my car.

Its not that it failed or wasn't working properly, but more that for the same price, you can get a HU that has a nicer interface, better features, and puts out more power.

As luck would have it I just found a used Alpine for less than the new Kenwood, except that it comes with the wiring harness and dash kit.

is it pre-amped? i could be wrong, i'm sure someone will chime in if i am, but aren't most Alpines non-amped? you have to run an amp for the front speakers and then a second amp for the sub, right?
