Has anyone ever experienced a humming wind noise coming from there A pillars at high speed? I was on my way home from work on my favorite back empty road pushing the car pretty hard I got up to a higher speed when I heard the humming coming from both the drivers and passenger side this was discussed on a 92x forum I guess it a common Subaru issue? Does anybody know the cause of this wind noise? It was weird I though something was wrong Heres a video of a 92x on the Autobahn you can here the noise really good at the :17 mark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaxMt9Lkmo8
I get a wind noise in that area a lot. It's the weather stripping around the windshields for me. Because the window is frameless, it sometimes pinches the weather stripping when it's opened then closed. Whenever I hear it I just roll the window down a couple millimeters then back up and its fine. As for a noise when going at high speeds, I've gotten a pretty loud humming at 110+ before. I don't know what it is, but it is kind of a one second no noise, next second, noise thing. I guess just something random with the aerodynamics.
I get that noise to Rome. Specially if i am doing around 80 to 90 and there is a good cross wind. Its a fairly loud just like in that Saab video link you posted.
I get a wind noise from the Outback's passenger side of the windshield at 110mph...but its CLEAR its an air leak as the glass is not well sealed at that one part due to some older rust from a previous windshield. However...of all the SUBARU's I've had past 100..never heard that noise. I've had several STi's to 140~160 range, a 2000 and 2005 2.5 RS to 120+ and my Outback to 140. Also, I've had my 1987 RX past 130 a few times. No wind noise or humming at all...at the time it was 18 years old. I have yet to experience said noise.
From some people on NASIOC, it is due to the mirrors. Someone said that if you put tape over the hinge on the mirror, the noise goes away, but I dont know if that is true. BTW...please keep it safe on the streets (110+ is not safe)
Since the Gen 2 USDM Legacy does not have folding mirrors, thus no gap, it would make sense that the USDM 1995~1999 Legacy would not make that noise. Are you kidding? These speeds were all attained in a safe environment on a closed circuit referred to as a 'race track.' I usually never exceed 9mph over the posted limit unless I am overtaking or traffic is packed up and it would be dangerous to operate at a speed under said traffic flow (like 285/75/85/20 in ATL for example). True....to an extent. Things just get louder the faster you go...the exhaust isnt really one of them.
I know I shouldn't have been driving that fast in the first place but if you worked were I work and you were on a long open stretch of road with no cars you'd do it also! Oh wells, it was the first time I heard the noise I tried all the windows to make sure that they were all up and they were.
umm oh yeah it was all done on a closed course for testing purposes  I know thats not an excuse for my speeding but doesn't anyone else just feel like opening it up every now and then?
I have also seen on Nasioc similar responses that it is the mirrors. I think someone said it was the stickers that are on the underside of the mirror. They removed the stickers and the noise stopped.
I can push on the corner of the window trim and get it to stop. I don't think it's the sticker...hell, I don't know that I HAVE this sticker of which they talk about....
tape the window off and start driving, have a freind peel off the tape. when you hear the noise, that is where the weather strippiing is no longer making contact.
My 06 is the noisiest car(as far as wind noise ) that I have owned (had 04 before this one and 20 or so misc. ones before that.) None of the noise is from the weatherstrip.(or windows)It is coming from either hood scoop, mirrors or just overall front-end aerodynamics.Work for toyota and we use the tape method to isolate wind noises.Plus if you use the blue masking tape your car looks really cool.(not)
I have never heard it in my 9-2x. I am like WJM and won't go 10 over the posted limit, but on the interstate crusing at 80-85 I have never heard anything like that.
Hey guys, hope I can help out on this one. My wife's Legacy had this problem and it took forever to find a fix. Theres a TSB out on it but nobody seems to remember it (including most dealerships lol). Anyway, this wind noise (if it's the same issue), is caused by a gap between the mirror panel and the interior sail panel. Because our windows are frameless and the tendency to push the door closed by the window instead of the door, this torques the panel and mirror apart causing a slight gap and the wind gets in there and gets loud. The fix, fortunately, is pretty simple. Just roll down your window all the way, and squeeze the mirror and sail panel back together. Can usually be done by hand, tho the TSB said something about using a clamp if its too difficult. It also mentioned measurements and such... I'll see if I can find it and link it here later. Good luck - hope this helps! Edit: Found it - http://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?t=33
Thats totally old news and a very common known issue. But that noise and the noise that the OP is talking about is 100% different.
^^ LOL well I suppose for a Subaru Master Tech, it would be old news. I know that in my experience, it took damn near forever to find the info - the two or three dealerships I called to ask about it couldn't even make a guess and only told me to "bring it in - we can look at it". Like I said, I wasn't sure if it was the same issue or not, but I figured I'd throw it out there in case. O-well, guess the OP has to keep trying...
^^^ thanks for the input! I have heard this noise a few time myself and the sorce seems to be my mirrors.
Wow this is a thing of beauty!!!! This has slightly annoyed me since I purchased the car. Just last week my girl friend noticed it and I said to myself it is time to look into this.
