Does anyone know where to find these gears? I am tryting to upgrade my o2 Tranny prior to adding HP! Seems the problematic gears are 1&2 and the RA gears tend to break as well. I am reading good things about the Legacy GT
    1&2 upgrade. Thanks

they are about 150-200 each from the dealership. I had them quoted when this topic came up a while ago.

Are the raitos the same as the WRX gears?

How hard would this be for the mechanically inclined, but never opened the suby tranny?

Will said the ratios are longer and drop right in in place of wrx gears but you need a triple cone set(?) i believe. WJM feel free to chime in. He also said to replace 3rd and 4th with 06 wrx gears.

And I wouldn't recommend a mechanically inclined person to do this unless you are working with a spare tranny.

I was thinking about getting a used transfer case and building this tranny set up in my spare time so I can learn

You will need the 1st driven gear, the 1st gear double cone syncro set, 2nd driven gear and the input shaft from a 2005~2008 Legacy GT 5MT.

It will cost anywhere between $800 (me) and $1600 (typical dealership) in labor to install the gears if you bring the whole car.

If you hand over the transmission the costs typically come down to $500 (me) and $1000 (typical dealership).

As for parts costs, you can buy the needed parts (including gear oil and the lock nuts that you will need to replace, as well as the gaskets and sealer) from me for ~$650.

Give a at least 1 week notice so I can get the parts (pre-payment of the parts is required) here. Once your car is here (or you hand me the transmission) allow for a 1 week turn around. This gives me enough time to make sure everything is good.

I've done gearsets in a matter of hours before...but I would not want to tell you a day or two and something happen such that I need to order another part or it takes longer than it should have.

Unfortunately there is no real upgrade for 3rd....so far that I've found.

Did you loose 3rd after an upgrade or just in general?

No, there is no cheap shortcut. The LGT 1-2 will still break. Its just a little bit tougher than the stock/RA/STi gears.

the PPG straight cut gears would be my choice. Nearly unbreakable.

I am talking to a guy right now selling slightly used PPG Helical 3&4. I just want to make sure they are synchromesh and not dogcut. I am doing this on a daily driver. Probably go with the same for 1&2 then.
