So I recently rolled 36,000 miles on my suby, and it struck me... do I need to change any fluids or get service done on anything? (besides the oil/filter change, of course)

well maybe sometime soon, we can have a "do a big service" gtg :) I'll bring some stainless steel brake lines to put it too!! oh, another question that jumped in my head...

i know it's dependent on a lot of factors (driving style, track days, etc) but what type of mileage can i expect from the stock brake pads/rotors? i use the car mainly as a daily driver, lots of highway (at least 50%) and no track days (yet)... i am a pretty spirited driver in the city, but really, i slow down by rev matching and down shifting more that using the brakes... :D

Check the owner's manual to mkae sure what needs replacing (maintenenace schedules are similar for all imprezas, but not the same for instance my plugs need replacing at 30k, yours might be at 60k and the your fuel filter might be at 30k but mine says 60k)

Then get the parts from the cheapest place you can as price can differ greatly even from dealership to dealership. I got almost all of my 30k stuff for under 100 bucks, but then again I didn't need to replace brake pads. I also think pads are replaced under warranty, but at 36k you might be out of warranty.

Next, make it NOT COLD outside so we can come help you. Most of this stuff is easy but time consuming.

    the 30k service.

For STi's i recommend the following:

    Oil and filter change
Coolant flush (I recommend a new thermostat and gasket as well)
Change transmission gear oil (use SUBARU Extra-S)
Change rear diff oil (Use SUBARU STi LSD)
Spark plugs are *recommended* eventho they are '100,000 mile' plugs
    Air filter (use SUBARU 16546AA080)

05+ SUBARUs do not have fuel filters, so dont let anyone sell you a fuel filter.

Federal regulation requirements that changed around in the late 90's dictated that no vehicles sold in the US will have fuel filters by the 2005MY. (or so)

Same with electronic throttle control....top speed limiters...electronic braking/steering/traction control/tire pressure monitoring systems...ALL of those items are FEDERAL mandates on passenger vehicles.

There are some REALLY ridiculous regulations coming into effect in the next 5 years. Basically it takes the driver completely out of the driving of the car. Not that I can blame the feds seeing as how the general public cant drive worth a fuck...but for us enthusiasts...it sucks.

Remove it and place a coupler in its place. Dont do it.

No, it does not have a 'fuel filter' at all. it has the same fuel 'sock' on the fuel pump pickup. All 1989+ Legacys, 1992+ Imprezas...etc etc have 'socks' on the fuel pump pickup in the tank. Those are only to catch large debris...it does not catch the fine sediment that get into the injectors and clogs them etc etc.

But if I don't have a fuel filter, then why does my owner's manual tell me to replace it at 60k miles?

I couldnt tell you on that.

However i do know that some things that needs to be changed from one model year to the next sometimes do not get changed...
