ok I don't want to bore you guys with the whole story. so my car is making a crazy whining sound when it's in gear and not in neutral and it's only over 2,000 rpms as far as I can tell.

When did it start and has anything unusual happened with your gearbox lately?

Yes, I'd say take it to SOG and have them look/drive it and properly find out the problem....maybe WJM will chime in here soon????

Alright, so if you're rolling around at 3K rpms in gear it whines but if you put the car in neutral and coast you get nothing?

yea I don't think its the diff. Mine makes a noise every once in awhile but not in neutral. It could possibly be the throwout bearing or just something else

bring it and lets go for a ride to hear the problem. it could be multiple things. no reason guessing at what it is. also dont drive it unless you have to, if there is a problem you dont want to make it worse.
call up at classic (770)394-9100, ask for jerry and make an appointment to bring it in as soon as you can.

    Do that.

Pretty much impossible to diagnose noises like that over internet/phone/txt msg.....etc...

It might be cheaper to fix it while it is making a noise and driving, rather than no noise because it is not running. So when you have it towed in make sure you have it towed to Classic Subaru?!

I'm just updating to see if anyone else has any ideas so I don't have to pay $137 to get someone to look at my car.

These are not cheap cars to maintain. Have you verified that it would be $137?

From the sound of it this won't be a cheap fix in any case. Anything driveline related with these cars tends to be hellaciously expensive. It's like driving a Ferrari, except not quite as quick and you can comfortably seat 5.

I, as well, would like to know what 137.00 covers.

it covers the diagnostic reading and should I fix it, the 137 would be absorbed into the cost of repair.

I had the same issue and it was the main shaft bearing...forgot exactly what it was called, but basically when another subaru dealership did some tranny work, when they re-installed the transmission, they managed to knock in 2 of the guides that hold the engine and transmission in alignment and it killed a bearing that is JUST inside the transmission, which in turn killed the main shaft and the throw out bearing...$1600 later I had my car back. WISH I had had the cash for a 6 speed swap at the time.
