I thought I read this somewhere, but now I can't place it.

    Does putting a 4eat into 1 lock a differential?

I'm pretty sure that I've heard that before too back in my 4EAT days. 1 and 2 both lock the center diff I believe for better traction. You can also pull the FWD fuse to make the tranny FWD only for towing.

i thought the FWD fuse was only on RS models...

No, it should work on any impreza with a 4EAT, as the AWD system will be electronically controlled as opposed to being an integral part of the driveline like in the 5MT, which employs a viscous coupling and a 50/50 split between the front and rear.

If I'm correct the normal split on the 4 speed is 80/20 F/R, right?

nope. WRX 4eat is special 45/55 front/rear split

the FWD fuse lust jocks at 45/55

but the 4eat on the wrx is more like the central on the STi.

I had it explained to me that its an advanced 4eat in the wrx thats different from the other 4eats. It had VTC or (VDC?) like the high end Outback and SVX.

edit: okay VDC was a trim level of the Outback which indicated it came with a 4eat with a VTC attached.

but anyways, both 2 and 1 lock the center diff?

Yes you are right Mad Mallard.

VTD VDC on the 4eat. thats why 4eats from wrxs are used in Drag racing quite a bit..

Well that and launching a car with a high-stall torque converter gets consistent 60ft times. I want to say the previous owner of my car said launching at 4100rpm, that the car was good for perfectly consistent 1.7-1.8s.

What kinda times do you get with the stock TC? I've heard a high stall is good for a solid .5-1 second in the quarter mile and most of that is within the first 1/8th.

The TC isnt what will kill your tranny, its the hot ATF that will. Get a tranny cooler on your car ASAP if you want your tranny to live. Hayden 403 is $40. www.projectwrx.com has a good writeup.

Make sure you let the tranny cool down between runs and it will last a while. Synthetic ATF also helps.

how high did you get the stock TC to stall?

I'll check my times, I put em in a spreadsheet at home...

Well ive launched my car twice in the last 3 years... thats why

i really do need to invest in a cooler tho .. any idea how much the install it?

I never had the car in any way shape or form stock. It had a 4100rpm Protorque TC. From what I can remember I'd launch the car at 4100 (17psi, full boost), it would spin all 4 tires and get out like a bat out of hell.

I think with enough power mods the stocker will go up to 3300 or so.

nsvwrx, if you look on that link its a fairly easy install. There are already lines running through the radiator to cool the tranny, you just piggyback the cooler on top of those lines that way you dont have to deal with installing a thermostat to keep temps regulated. The tranny cooler mounts between the AC cooler and radiator, unless you want a bling install that'll bend the fins, then you could mount it anywhere.

My dad had one laying around with a fatter core than the regular haines; we mounted mine in front of the radiator. Works out well, but haven't install the tranny temp guage yet.

you'll need the cooler, and another $25 or so in hoses to cut to length and more fluid to add.
