my engine noise/what my oil pan looks like

Discussion in 'Modifications & DIY how-to' started by importracer689, Mar 4, 2008.

  1. okay guys,
taking mike (liquidforce's) advice i drained my oil into a brand new pan (again) and cut up my filter. I also put my pinky in the drain hole and did not find any noticeable grit. interestingly enough there was not a single piece of metal in the oil filter at all (i flattened out the cardboard from the filter).
heres what the oil in the pan looked like when i was done. let me know what you guys think? i guess im buying a motor this weekend.

I would have expected to see some in the filter.

How big are the bigger pieces? It is hard to tell from the picture.

    Run it till it dies

  5. big enough to pick up and feel. it is weird, there is a ton in the pan, but none in the filter, just like my 302 was that had 8 shredded rod bearings and mains

i mean i dont think i need to send that off, there definitely should not be that much sparkly shit in oil right? ive never seen it like that.

For real. Throw some 50wt in there and run it until it wont run anymore.

jk, then you'll ruin your heads and cams for sure assuming no permanent damage has occurred yet.

Same thing it sounds like with FACE but possibly worse total oil starvation

Jump on the bandwagon and blame Mobil 1. Honestly I dont know the real reason, I guess these motors have oil cooling issues or oil supply issues at high RPMs.

Blame Subaru keep mobile one out of it!

Oil supply is the problem based on my research, from the Sump to the pump. You can put 5w-30: Motul, Mobile One, Amsoil, 5w-40 etc, you name it, no pressure or bad sump = toast! There is a mother load of posts and articles about it and it is no mystery. The sumps are prone to failure at the flange and has a postage stamp size inlet at the pick up not suitable for severe duty as well as bad fitment! It springs a tiny leak at the flange that grows over time slowly and surely and next thing you know hmmmm oil light and ticking hmm haven't heard that before..........."strange I've been babying my car", "what's up with that?!?!" then the old "Sorry sir/ma'am looks like you need a new engine"

I just ordered a 12mm JDM oil pump to ensure I am good with flow at high rpm and especially with mods. Hopefully it'll make up for the lame ass sump/oil delivery design especially at the pick-up and that my sump is good, but I will see when I swap the pump.

This is the same reason I stopped purchasing Fords! Companies advertising performance vehicles without the design to back it up. Surprised and saddened to find this in a Subaru, might be the first and last one I purchase! Engine failure at low mileage stock, or little to no mods! I don't want to hear, "only one out of every 200" my fkn ass, Just ask FACE and obviously importracer689 or just go to NASIOC, it's Pathetic! If the outcome of this was a simple $200 fix, that would be tolerable, it is complete and total short block and engine rebuild! If you have a moded car under warranty or out of warranty car, with no way to wrench on it and this is your daily driver! These aren't cheap cars to work on! These are hard economic times in America for some folks.

same issue brought up in another thread^^

    call him and ask

and is a high flow pump the answer to this problem? I have an ej257 at home and would hate to put it in and run into an oiling problem

You should probabaly give him a PM, he worked on my car last weekend right after he had trouble. It sounds like he spun a bearing. It is in the shop with Kingrex.

I think the high flow pump is insurance as long as you have a good sump. If the motor is out I would install a high flow and check the sump, might as well. The high flow cost me $187 shipped which is pretty good. Cheaper than a new engine!

Don't waste your money on the JDM 12mm pumps. Just go to any dealership and get the new 08sti oil pump. They are 11mm and have a much better design than the older 12mm pumps. I think they cost around 120bucks, and you will get free shipping.

No a pump is not going to fix the oiling problems with a suby.

Its a combo of bearings, clearances, oil path, and oil pump

Will a newer oil pan/sump tube make the difference?

I think I saw on iwsti that the 08's pan/sump may work?

I thought the 08sti's ran the same pan and pickup as the earlier models. In any event, unless the oil pump pickup breaks that is not going to cause the subaru oil issues. Well unless your car pulls over 1g in a long sweeper. Which in that case you would want a larger oil pan to add compacity so as to not starve the pickup of oil.

Atleast they recognized the issue i.e. 11mm pump with better design.

    Mark,

    Check your pm's.

I'll have time this upcoming week to install that longblock.

05 and up all have the same part number...Intresting though how the wrx sump tube has a larger openingat the bottom (STi has a cap with the opening the size of a stamp and the wrx has a two inch opening) and a different shaped bracket. I would love to know the idea behind making them different

    :dunno

Smaller opening = increase vacume. If you have a small opening and a large opening and the same pump the large area will take in more mass at a lower flow compared to a small area taking in less mass at a higher flow. maybe higher pressure?

    My Guess
