Ok, so the time has FINALLY come to tune the WRX. I never thought I would see the say, but frankly its LONG overdue. Its going to TopSpeed to let the masters to their dizzle, lol. Mods only include UpPipe and TBE w/ EcuTek......... Before I go, what should I do maintenance wise to get the most out of it? Dumb question? Maybe, but I dont want to get there and something breaks that could have been prevented, or the numbers are bleow the norm. The car has 91k on it, also I believe it to have the original clutch! I plan to purchase a Perrin crank pulley after reading the reviews on it. I have the stock TMIC though. This is a half assed post, but I posted for any random input, so thanks in advance! One more thing: Someone refresh me, is there really an economy driving map that can be made? Basically one that gets the best gas mileage possible with good reliability.
^^^May I ask why? Not challenging your expertise, but I like to learn...... Also, anymore advice before you transform my car, lol!
i am wondering if your clutch will hold on the dyno, when i had my 02 sedan the clutch only lasted 65k......
I will try my best to find out if the clutch was ever changed. I bought the car from Classic in May 2006. I will check the service records tomorrow and see whats available. Since Scott advised on the crank pulley, I will see if I can set an appoinment for sometime this week or Saturday morning. I am driving to Orlando on April 4, and I would like to have a good spirited drive:ddirty:
when jamey got my old car tuned they were like at least 2 weeks out on appointments. that may have changed, but i would call ASAP.
Before ANY tune do the following..... 1) New plugs don't hurt 2) Get a CLEAN air filter 3) Fresh oil doesn't hurt 4) CHECK for BOOST leaks....this takes a lot of time to check sometimes 5) Check for leaks everywhere...turbo, IC, uppipe, etc (boost leak test will show a lot of these) 6) Make sure the AC works.....your tuner will appreciate it That's all I can think of right now...
I got an APV1 and have been meaning to try the economy map, but have not yet. I think it just limits boost to about 7 psi. If you have a boost gauge you can do this yourself. I asked on NASIOC if anyone saw big MPG gains with the economy map and pretty much the answer was no. The impression I get is not too many people that have a WRX are worried about economy.
Yes, Scott will be able to tune you for two maps that you can switch between by flooring the gas and hitting the rear window defrost button. As CoolRex said, might want to change the plugs, oil, and air filter, and check for any leaks, but aside from that, you are good to go. Is your clutch slipping at all yet. If not, I think you should be good on your current clutch.
Not at all, it grabs like a mofo! I don't shift my car that hard due to the known tranny suckage in the 02's. All of the above mentioned will be done ASAP!!! Thanks all, I love this forum!
The tranny issue only arises when your transmission sees a good bit of instantaneous shock load that causes the shaft to vibrate when in second gear. In other words if you don't side step your clutch when coming out of first then it should be fine at your power level. Good luck on the tune though. Hope you see the numbers and the gains that you want.
did you get an appointment yet? post a date, if its a few weeks out i may able to swing by. i figured since you came to my tuning i could come to yours.
I called them today, I will receive a call back tomorrow morning for the available times. And yes, it is a few weeks out. If I land a job soon though, I may end up selling it for something more travel friendly in the corporate arenahnoes: We shall see!
The Cobb AccessPort econo map sets waste gate duty cycle to 0% across the board. The result is that you get maximum boost determined by the physical loading on a spring. No amount of ECU tuning will change that maximum. It seems that that spring leaves you with a maximum of roughly 7 PSI. 7 PSI is still enough boost to produce disappointing mileage. So, even with the econo map, you still have to exercise care at the throttle to get good mileage. I can exercise that care with our without a map that limits the waste gate duty cycle. So, I don't mess with the econo map. If it's your nature to put the foot to the floor and rev above 3K RPM, the map may help your mileage. DD
That is good to know. I was going to try it just to see what I get anyway, but now I am not expecting too much. I guess I would rather excercise restraint and have the power on hand if needed.
