Break in period on new motor

    So I just want to see what everyone thinks about the break in period on a new motor...:)

    -keep it under redline and under 4k rpm for the most part, but try to venture higher every once in a while.
    -vary the rpm's frequently
    -change oil after the first 1000 miles
    -allow for warmup and cooldown

    yeah that pretty much sums it up...

    good call on the NO SYNTHETIC point. only mineral oil during break in and IMHO till 10k or so, but i know that will be disputed.

    Drive it like you are planning on driving it everyday. If you beat on your car then beat on it.

    Every motor I have ever built we drive it down the street usally for about 5 minutes, come back change the oil, drive it again check the oil....put it on the dyno and make pulls.

    Seriously though. Drive it like you would daily as Mr. Ball said. If you baby it, then baby it. Otherwise, let it ride. That's what I've done in the past and have been ok. ;)

    Yep.

    Then put GOOD QUALITY synthetic in it ASAP.

    I broke in the one that I put in my WRX (brand new EVERYTHING on the EJ205) by autoxing it the next day. By the time I got to turner field, it had 16 miles on the engine since I installed it the night before. After I put it in the night before, I drove it for 6.7 miles (around the 'tuning loop') then put Motul in it.

    Consumes no oil across 5k miles with Motul 8100 5w30.

    I've always been a believer of seating piston rings quickly. only way is with cylinder pressure :)

    I have fallen victium to a broken sump tube...
    only having 37K Elanor will be fixed under warranty!

    Sweet. Thats what I like to hear in these cases.

    Seriously, drive it like you do normally, and it'll love you for it. Change the oil ASAP....or have king drive it for 10~20 miles like you would drive it and then change the oil.

    edit: you'll have to pay for that oil change. Warranty gives you the oil/filter that initially goes into the engine.

    what I did was do a full lap around I-285 (=100MILES) then change the oil, then you can drive it like you stole it. I've always broke in my motors agessivly. Congrats on the new motor.

    Yeah....codes of death. Every time.

    ALL warranty repair parts must be returned to the parts department as there is lots of paperwork to be done. Then all of those parts get shipped back to SOA. What SOA does with them...I dont know. Most of the time they get shipped back to Japan.

    Of the parts that do not get returned...they are disposed of properly under the supervision of the local SOA reps.

    Thanks Scott. I looked everywhere for that article.

    That's how I broke in my old DSM motor. It had more compression and ran better than the engines I broke in easily. I drove the DSM for about 20 miles to break it in and then changed the oil and then drove it hard.

    Snap!

    04 Forester, 51k miles...

    P0011/P0021.

    1.5 qts low.

    Complete metal contamination in the oil. The oil is black'r than black....plus the AVCS is not working, at all.

    Dunno yet. The lady cant leave it today....so...shes going to risk driving it. Plus I need to get authorization from the local service rep to tear into it.

    If shes 'lucky' it'll be a sump tube...as she's broke.
    if she's unlucky...the sump tube wont be broken and the AVCS banjo bolt screens will be clogged up. Instant warranty coverage denial.

    Yikes. I've heard of STi owners with big turbos removing the banjo bolt screens for better oil flow to the turbo. That bad?

    Nah. All the screens do is allow us to deny warranty claims. If they are not there: denied. If they are there and clogged: denied. If they are there and clean: covered.

    In a nutshell of course...shipping extra, no returns on special order parts, 25% restocking fee, no returns on electrical, no responsible for your own stupidity, etc etc...:rofl:

    That's stupid. If they are clogged and you did the regular maintenance on the car and it was 100% stock then something else is wrong and is out of your hands.

    But thats just it, if you do the proper oil change intervals then you DO NOT have clogged screens. If you sump tube is broken and the screens are clogged, well, the screens are clogged due to the sump tube being broken and metal being everywhere. No big deal, subaru give you new everything.

    if you go PAST the oil change intervals and/or run it out of oil...then you are not taking proper care of it.

    Are they easily removed? I am out of warranty and do more than regular maintenance so one less thing to clog or slow down the flow would be a good thing.

    Hope she kept her oil change receipts.....................................

    You don't want to remove them because (I believe) they will save other parts of your motor if you do have a problem.

    My question is should you ever change them?

    The EJ205 does not have screens. Only the engines with AVCS/D-AVCS (EJ255/EJ257/EZ30D Gen2/EZ36D/EJ207 Version 7+ etc)

    Most likely the engineering reason behind them is to catch the small debris that would get trapped in the AVCS sprockets and/or would ruin the turbo bearing. However, in reality if the debris gets there, there is more behind it, clogs it up and starves the oil supply to the AVCS and turbo. Then you get the P0011/P0021 engine death codes.

    However, if you do your regular oil changes and make sure its always full, you should NEVER have any debris.

    Debris=bearing material and/or sludge.

    OK great well I guess I lucked out there! Plus I have a back up turbo, as you may be aware of, Ha! King is going to change the oil today, first time using the Shell Rotella T 5w40. I will see how the Amsoil held up, right at 3grand on it.

    Sadly that was the other motor job that King had...

    Mine is the Wrb STi and we are starting today on putting Elanor's heart back together :naughty:
