Was changing my oil today and saw this....obviously not good. Is this the timing belt? Also how much is this belt to replace...i start a new job tommorow, and don't have time to change it between now and then and i need to drive the car. How long will it last?

It's got these cracks in the pics, but the rest of the belt (from what i can see) looks fine.

Is that bolt in the picture by the ps pump touching the belt?

Changing the belt is a 5 minute job.

it's close...but not touching. Not any closer then the hose going to the pump.

that bolt is supposed to be holding a belt cover like this.

if you don't have that cover i would remove the bolt. the way the cuts in the belt look, it looks as though it would be that bolt and i cant think of anything else in the belt path that would cut it like that. and this wasnt answered earlier but that isn't your timing belt. its your Alternator Drive Belt.

    You're slow! :keke:

No, its not the timing belt. Its the ALT/PS pump belt. Its like $20 from subaru (or less). Takes me under a minute to change it once I have the car in my bay.

I changed mine after it disentegrated at about 63K. It is very easy, not the 1 minute like Will though. I had adjusted so the belt was as loose as it could be, but it was very hard getting it over the lip of the pully. That said, it was still not too bad of a job.

Thanks guys. Is it ok to drive on? If so, for how long? Can't get a belt since sog parts closed at 6.

I speak from experience, if it breaks- the car is still driveable for a bit. No alternator (hope you battery is good) and no PS (not fun), but you can still drive. Also the ABS light comes on for some reason.

The other part of my story, I got both belts (AC also ) at Advanced Auto (or autozone). When I got them I did not realize how tight it was to get them over the lip on the pulley and was not able to get the main belt on. The AC belt is a bit longer (but not as wide). I was able to put that one on driving the alternator and PS pump. I drove with that and no AC for a couple of days until I was able to get to SOG.

    Good luck.

well look at it this way...you've been driving with it like that for who knows how long....I don't think it will hurt for a couple more hours ;)

Subaru Mechanics do it in 1 minuite or less...

I wouldn't be bragging about that.

We had a belt on our car look very similar before we swapped it out. They are easy to swap yourself. I wouldn't worry about driving with it as it is now, but I would get a new belt as soon as possible.
