is the best thing to do for an oil change is to get synthetic? cause someone told me Subaru of Gwinnett had a different kind of oil that they recommend for the oil changes. Any thoughts?
how many miles on your car? You are supposed to have dinosaur oil until a certain mileage (proper break in) and then switch to synthetic. SOG sells Motul 5w-30 which is 100% synthetic. It is great oil, but it is pretty expensive. Before I used Motul, my car had Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w-30 in it and that is a little cheaper. I heard that Mobil is not 100% synthetic anymore, but that could just be hearsay.
No, I lied. Mobil says its ok. Go for it! http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Synthetics/Myths.aspx
Castrol 0w30 > Mobil 1. Make sure you get the one that says "Made in Germany" on the back. 100% synthetic and a couple dollars cheaper per quart than Motul.
I had an issue with motul....it was great at first, but after it heated up and broke down a little, leaked like the mail boy at Enron. That and it burned like mad. I switched back to mobil 1 and had NO leaks at all. After that, I switched to Royal Purple (just to test it out) and it was awesome! I could feel a difference in how smooth the car was and how fast it was with this oil compared to mobil 1 and Motul. And it's right in between the 2 price wise... Mobil 1 = good for me Motul = ok at first, but not after about 2000 miles. (rated at 5000 miles between changes) Royal Purple = great so far! I've had no issues. no more burn than mobil 1, and no leaks!
you should not ben able to feel the oil difference in terms of power...unless there is something wrong with the motor?
when I say feel the difference, it was in how the motor pulled. it just felt smoother and cleaner than before the oil change
See I had the opposite problem. My car went through a quart or two per oil change on Mobil 1 but I have only had a half quart of Motul in the 2 oil change cycles I have had Motul in. So Mobil 1 burned off a lot faster than Motul in my car.
oil 15w40 winter 20w50 summer. castrol or M1 Make sure you fill that oil filter with oil before you put it on.
I've always used mobil 1. However at about the 2500 mile mark it starts to feel less smooth. I always change every 3k. I don't burn any oil or have leaks.
When I made the switch to synthetic, I first used the German Castrol 0w-30. It burned a quart in 1,000 miles. After doing some searching on www.bobistheoilguy.com I have settled on Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30. Doesn't really burn any significant amount. I get it at Wal-Mart for around $20 for a 5 quart jug.
Motul 5w30 8100 that SOG has is great stuff. SUBARU of Jacksonville has a TON in stock as well. Call Bill in parts and he'll hook you up if you dont want to drive to SOG and have it done. I use it in my Outback and both the WRXs. I go for 5,000 mile change intervals. ZERO consumption in either WRX. The Outback uses/leaks 1qt per 1000 no matter what i put in it. You can use 'synthetic' oil at mile 0 in your engine. The whole 'you cant use synthetic until x mileage' is BS. We dont live in the 70's/80's anymore. I put Motul in my BRAND NEW ENGINE that went in my WRX after only 6.7 miles of driving (test drive to make sure there were no leaks and to seat the rings).
I've always been under the impression that burning some oil is good. Some being the key word here. I'd I'm wrong, I stand corrected Leaking oil on the other hand...I've got plenty of experience in that department! Limited oil consumption is ok...my wording on not burning oil = baddidnt come out right. Oops!
uhh...ok. Lets go over this. The design/engineering of the modern internal combustion engine necessitates that the piston and rings must be lubricated during operation. Thus oil is splashed and/or squirted into the cylinder. Oil gets on the cyl walls. Here, the oil control ring set removes MOST of the oil on the cyl walls. The rest, a small amount, just enough to lube the compression rings, get on the compression rings. From there there is an even smaller amount left on the cyl walls that does get burned during the combustion process. On a properly assembled and broken in engine there should be ZERO consumption across 3000 to 5000 miles, NOTICEABLE consumption that is. Of course, this assumed the proper oil is used and the vehicle is operated as designed. SOOOOOOOO......in review, modern engines should not consume oil. However, the industry max standard is still 1qt consumed per 1000 miles of operation. If more, something is wrong and it should be fixed.
I will be doing Mobile 1 on my first oil change... I am going with 5W30... but may consider 10W-50 since I am daily driving it.
