RA Gear Set

Discussion in 'Modifications & DIY how-to' started by Maniacurabus06, Apr 28, 2008.

  1. Yea, so my 06 Wrx has em. I haven't really driven my car since I got her back due to not having the 09 sticker for my tag.

Anyways, who else on here has these gear sets? Would you guys post up what you like and dislike about them? From what I can tell, they're too short for my taste, not sure what I can max out now. Not like I'd max out my car but just curious.

Do I just have the STi's 1-5th gears? Does that mean I'd top out like at 120? LOL Awww man, this is no good. :hsnono: haha

There's 2 different RA gearsets. One's got a shorter 5th gear. Maybe that's the one you have.

  3. These are the ones I got.

I know that if this one blows, im either selling my subie and getting an evo or getting an STi tranny lol. I've gone through too many of them, im just tired if it now. It's not worth it at the end...

Mine (V6 RA SE) Yours (V6 RA)
    First Gear 3.166 3.083
    Second Gear 1.882 2.062
    Third Gear 1.296 1.545
    Fourth Gear 0.972 1.151
    Fifth Gear 0.738 0.825

The ones you have are really short. I think they're just like GTscoob's ratios.

^^^ Wes, your ratios are standard 5spd STI ratios, the other column are RA ratios. I've got the standard STI ratios albeit with a 4.44 final drive over the 3.9 that most other guys end up with.

The ratios shouldnt be too short as long as you didnt touch the stock final drive. If you went with the RA 5th gear it'll top out at 160ish at redline, if you're on a stock 5th it'll go up to 180ish theoretically by redline I believe.

lol at that one. Lets just say its been a while since I've been out and I'd still like to see how my 2.0 fares against some 2.5s . . .

They're STI SE (RA Special Edition) according to Gruppe-S. I've seen pics of the 2 next to eachother and they're identical other than the ratios

They suck. At 350hp area you WILL break them. MPG is horrible on them too if you do a lot of city driving.

    ^^ what he said.
I had the full set and could not get more than 22mpg. First is a bit longer but everything else is shorter.

    4th tops out @ 106 and 5th probably in the low 130s.

I moved to the 6mt as I was approaching the 350 mark and did not want to break another tranny.

  9. It has been awhile :D I too wouldn't mind how my 2.5 does against a certain 2.0.

Well seeing as I work 30 miles from home, I do alot of hwy driving so hopefully it's not as bad. When i bought these freaking gears I knew they wouldn't last me long. But I don't plan on launching on them(as much as I did on my older ones lol). I may attend some track events though. lol

4th tops out at 106? Stock, from what I heard lol went all the way to 125! Tsk tsk this is not good... Guess my next move would be to save up for a 6mt or to just get rid of the subie and get a nice little audi. :p

    6MT Fawk the audi.
I would redline 4th at TGP and never hit 110. I too remember the stock 4th running to mid 120's.

    Stock 5MT 4th goes to 128mph.

  12. lol the audi a3 isn't a bad daily. :p

    Yup!

Man, these new gears are gonna suck!

You could always sell the tranny and upgrade to 6mt

  14. I would most likely be doing that...

Do you know how much it would be, just for the transmission?

I know i'd need some other things to make the swap fully complete. What are they, drive shaft, and what else? :p

6MT gears arent that much longer than the normal 5spd STI RA gears but they do give you a 6th gear for cruising.

  16. I was cruising this morning on 85 in 5th going 60 and my rpm was around 3300ish. Normal for these gears?

I really wouldn't care if the gears were the same, just the fact that I'd be driving a car with a badass tranny would be worth it. LOL plus I could do those 6k launches I love oh so much.

  17. Also I'd like to add... that while I was driving on the street, these gears I think would be better on gas than the stock ones. Because I can cruise in 5th and the rpm is around 2800ish. Back on my stock ones I'd have to be in 4th(around 3200ish rpm) cause in 5th i wouldn't be able to spool up quick enough. I think these gears would hurt me on the hwy tho. Any thoughts on this?

Ummm if you have the 2007 STi 6MT like mine that are much longer. My 4th winds out to 118-120mph.

  20. The 07 6mt would be dope as hell to have lol.

Just thinking about it is making my mouth water! I've seen vid's and the gears are just perfect for me! :D

It would be harder for you to swap to the 2007 transmission though since you have a 2006+ WRX. You are going to have to address your rearend. Get a 2002-2005 WRX rearend and it's simply swapping that rearend, driveshaft and the tranny in.

  22. Hmm thats interesting. Why would I need to do that with an 07 and not an 06- one?

This is kinda off topic but do you know how much better the 07's are in the 1/4? As far as trap speeds and time goes? I seriously wouldn't mind getting rid of these retarded gears for an STi tranny. I think that's the best modification you could possible do to a WRX.

its slower witha 6.. one extra shift

  24. On my stock gears I'd believe it, with these new ones. I doubt it lol.

And I was talking about 04-06's 6mt vs. the 07 one.

You would have to do that with the 06 STi 6MT as well. Dunno about the 2004-2005 STi 6MT. You have a different final drive. The 06-07 STi 6MT uses the same final drive as the 02-05 WRX only with a R180 rear diff.

told ur ass to get 6mt to begin with. U can get rid of your RA Box anywhere from 2200-2700. A 04 sti tranny will prbly cost you close to 4k for everything u need. I have seen 07 go for 6k+. To do your beloved 6k lauches...u'll def need R81 (Still not bulletproof). Reason i don't launch mine.
P.S take ur time looking around...you'll stumble upon a steal deal on STi drivetrain swap soon.

The 07 tranny is $3800 brand new from Subaru FYI.

You can do the entire 07 swap with the rear end you need since you have a 06+ wrx for under $4500 total. And that's a BRAND new tranny.

  32. lol yea dude. these gears are nice and all, it gets up there pretty quick too. but i know they're not going to last. :p as soon as I have enough money saved up, this transmission is gone! So i wont be abusing them, need em to last me atleast half a year lol.

oh wat 07 tranny swap with r81 and Sti axels for $4500 :eek3:. My brand new 06 Swap is about to go up for sale then. Wouldn't he need 07 STi hubs to do the full swap to go with R81?

    Whats an R81?

WRXs use an R160 rear end, STis R180 which is beefier to handle more torque. I wonder if its possible to throw a beefy nissan R200 under the back end?

What is a R81? No this is with the WRX axles and the WRX R160.

The A3 is really nice. My wife likes driving her 2.0 Lux package model.

  40. haha yea. Ive heard good things about it.

I no longer care about track events, racing or whatever. A nice little sweet looking audi doesn't sound bad to me. Im sure one day I'll have it, im 20, so im sure i'll get bored with its slowness so im sticking with my subie for now. Hopefully I save up some money for the 6 speed.

Tonight i was disappointed with my new gears lol. They're waayyy too damn short for me style of driving.

:pi just pwned myself i been wanting to say r180 lol. Year WRX has r160 and i was asking a full 07 swap for $4500(including r180, STi axles, hubs, and brakes )?

  42. Cool_____

    Cool_____ Banned

No $4500 for 07 Sti swap and 2002-2005 WRX R160 rear end. The 2006+ WRX has a different final drive ratio in it's rear end (it's still a R160 but with different ratios).
