my head hurts now....i got a 06 sti....it's holding....I am happy.....tank u, come again. P.S 07 tranny...good choice.
I finally figured out what I am going to do. It involves two straight cut gears followed by two helical gears and then a stock gear. Hopefully it won't take to long to get installed.
For sure, I dont know too many other gearsets that give you options for straight cut 1-2 and helical 3-4, and stock 5. That'll be a kickass setup with your motor, PPG gears are LOOOOOONG. Dug-E-Fresh at least was talking about running the stock 3rd up to 130ish mph but that was with an 8500 or 9K redline.
I am gonna laugh when he shreds 5th as he is traps 142...But if he traps that fast he would prolly be okay with a broken 5th.
i was under the impression that spec B 5th and 6th were longer than 07 sti, which would make the 4-5 upshift not so useless... has this been debunked?
the only difference between the Legacy spec b and 07 is that second is slightly longer. 1,3,4,5 and 6 are the same.
Are you serious? You know what a dogbox transmission is? You basically don't have to use a clutch (you can use it but don't have to) on a dogbox transmission. You simply YANK the gear in the gear you want it in. I think Austin (burnin4) had one in what used to be his STi.
I know what it is. I was just making comedy...which i failboated on. Problem with dog boxes is that they are expensive and need rebuilds QUITE often. Negative. Spec B has same 1-2-3-4 as 2007 and 2008 STi. 5th and 6th on the Spec B are taller. 07~08 STi upshift from 4th to 5th is useless. See above.
The problem with the Spec B is it is highly expensive for the WRX guys....at least the 02-05s. It would run around $8000-9000 for the swap. Spec B has no front LSD, the entire front transmission piece has to be swapped to make the speedo work, and some other things. And it has no DCCD too!
Well the PPG's aren't going to happen. I called to order them yesterday but the price had gone up 500 from what they were the last time I checked. Rallispec had the gears for 3800 and now because of the weak dollar they are 4300. That is just for the gears and not any of the other stuff that may need replacing. Looks like I'll be ordering a 07 6spd today. The 6 speed tranny and everything needed to install it will be less than the ppg gears. Oh well, at least the 07 gears are slightly longer 2-4 and way longer 5-6 than my jdm 6 speed.
I love my 6 speed Mike. For Street use it's perfect. On the drag strip though not so much. Are you going to activate the DCCD? You don't have to have the controller but it works. The main reason I got my controller was in case I snapped an axle. With no controller your car isn't going to move. With the controller you can turn it full aggressive and limp home (that's if you break a rear axle which is almost always the one to break....I haven't read about any broken front axles).
from what i've heard you can literally "drop" the specB 5&6 gears in there (an 07 mt housing) when you are ready... then you have the specB "length" with the STi sophistication (DCCD, front diff ect). ask somebody with more knowledge if you can do the same with the JDM 6MT gears
Not really. You still have to shift out of 4th if unless you can rev to 8000~9000 as at 7000 on stock size tires you are at 114mph. So...unless you can make the final drive taller (requires custom front ring and pinion) or taller tires, or rev higher, you are in the same boat. Shifting to 5th or 6th. Yes, spec B 5-6 will 'drop in.' However, by the time you spend the $ on the Spec B trans to get the LSD front and Active center diff, you have spent MORE than the cost of an 07 STi trans AND buying the taller 5-6. You have to buy the Impreza spec front diff housing, center diff housing, both LSD's (the center is around $2000 JUST for the diff alone) and then all the speedo and DCCD wiring/hardware and junk. Spec B and 07 STi trans cost the same out of the box. So about $200 more for gears and about $400~$600 labor to get them install, BOOM, you've got the ultimate STi trans.
You'd really think that subaru would do more with lengthening the final drive on the 6spds to complement the torquier, less rev-happy motor that we get over here. . . .
