ok, as mike has stated before the 07 sti tranny is on backorder and no telling when it will be available. i need a 6 speed badly with the power and hub swap im planning on doing. i am going to be looking into a legacy spec b tranny but i need to know if it has the same gear ratios as the 06-07 sti tranny. i have a r180 rear diff from an 06 sti and need to know if it will match the spc b tranny. if it is the same i will also need someone to lend me a spec b vin# so i can order it. thanks
The ratios are the same but I'm not sure what the gear reduction is on the transfer case, some subarus use a diffrent ring and pinion front and rear and then use an over or under driven transfer gear to compensate. Matt
And also don't forget, will the sti front axles fit into the spec b tranny? You'll need sti axles all the way around to make the 5x114 brembos work, or will the legacy axles work? If so, will they fit in the rear diff you have, etc.
The speed sensor will be an issue too. Hopefully WJM will chime in since he did this for somebody. It ended up costing way more than the 07 6 speed.
ok finally i was able to get on subarunet and look up specs on the tranny. the 07 legacy spec b tranny is 3.90 in front and 3.545 in rear so i will work for me. im going to price out spec b tanny and a 06 sti tranny and see wich is available.
spec B = too much trouble and cost 06 STI = crappy ratio's end result = wait...don't get impatient and regret it later!
You do know that in order to use the Spec B tranny you are gonna have to buy an Impreza front case and swap it? Then you also STILL have NO front LSD. The Spec B tranny costs the same as the 07 STi tranny but you have to do all that work to the Spec B tranny. 07 STi is drop in and fuggetaboutit.
I mentioned that to him the other night. He said that more than likely they wouldn't be available yet. Because they shouldn't be having tranny issues on that new of a car. Plus he said if it were the cost would probably be outrageous.
I'll do some checking tomorrow. I did notice that the 08 sti has no dip stick on the trans. All the ratios are identical to the 07.
The 08 uses the abs to measure speed. You will have the same issues that you would have with legacy 6 speed.

probably just going to try and get an 06 sti tranny if its available. i dont have time to wait that long as soon as i get the hubs back from the machine shop i need to be able to put everything together. i am getting tires of barrowing cars form work and my parents. i have only had my car for 1.5 months this whole year so far, the other times it have been down due to accidents or waiting in install parts. as far as the ratios go i really dont do alot of drag racing and i think that the 07 tranny is really only a big deal on the drag strip. plus if all goes accordingly and i am able to get the gt35r its going to be a blast no matter what tranny i get.
What date are you seeing for the 07 6 speeds to arrive? My last update was early August or the last week of July. I figure I'll ride the 5mt til the end of the year to save some money and try again.
i checked last friday and parts called soa and was told that japan didnt even have any, so who knows when it will be available
Maybe I shouldn't have advertised the 2007 Sti tranny cheapness on Nasioc. I know everyone including TechLord on here went out and bought one after I announced it.
Just got to this message. Looks like you already got a vin though. The ratios for the spec.B are: 1st 3.454 2nd 2.235 3rd 1.521 4th 1.137 5th .891 6th .707 Final drive = 3.454 If you still need a vin, let me know.

New. I told you....wait for the freaking 07 trans. What's wrong with the 5sp? Can't you drive easy on it until you can get the 07 trans?
i wrecked my car and 3 out of 4 of the hubs an knuckles are bent. i already bought sti parts to replace it with and cant put them on untill i get an sti trans. i really dont want to spend the money on buying and fixing the wrx stuff when i already have a couple grand in everything for the sti swap.
i have been looking at new trannys but if i could find a good used one i would consider it, just have found a used 06-07 tranny

^^I guess I wasn't smartass enough, I dont ever plan to remove that tranny I will pull the engine first.
You can use it but at that point you may as well get the Spec B tranny and the front LSD since you have to swap the front housings.
prices are up, and the wait is long. I would plan to spend no less than 4500 for everything. It will probably be less but this way you are not surprised.
Just to put things in retrospect as of now the PPG's are near the same cost....LiquidForce can verify that. However PPG's don't include LSD.
Since mine is currently my dd I've pretty much made up my mind on the 6mt. I want to upgrade the rear diff to the 180, axles, hubs and spindles when I do it as well as throwing some brembos on. Hopefully I can do all of that for around 5 by working a deal with someone on all used parts but we'll see.
