On reassembly of the short block...can I reuse the bolts that hold the two halves of the block together, or are these like head bolts/studs?

you can reuse the bolts but make sure to replace the sealing washers on the bolts that have them (the 12 point bolts in the coolant jackets). Otherwise you will have a nice oil/coolant milkshake that will destroy your engine.

    doh...

hey, on a side note...thursday night, I was headed toward 85 on Sugar Loaf, coming from GTC...I spotted a sliver bugeye at the intersection just before you get to the discover mills entrance...might that have been you?

So, I pick those up at the hardware store I assume...or are they special?

    Another question...

The overhaul gasket kit, there are just 2 kits correct...one for the EJ20 motors and one for the EJ25 motors...yes? I need the one for the EJ25 motors?

the cheapest I have found the overhaul kit is from subarugenuineparts.com here is the listing.

    Overhaul gasket set, all models, w/turbo, impreza - 2.5l, 1999-06 - 2.5L, 1999-06 04-05 $221.97

Is this the kit I need?

Dang, I seem to remember people using the EJ20 rebuild kit and then getting the STI head gaskets. But that is just what I remember....the EJ20 kit had the correct intake gaskets, etc. I am assuming you are doing the 2.5 with the EJ20 heads?

    ...got it, thanks.

Yes, EJ25 w EJ20 heads...I have read that to do the swap you buy the EJ25 kit...but I see why using the EJ20 kit would make more sense, I would love some clarification on this.

Donno, but if you look at the thread about the hybrid on a budget, the part listed that he bought was the EJ20 rebuild I believe. He even lists out part numbers for ya...think here it is listed as 2.5 on a budget or something along those lines. Here is the link though.

Thanks for the link...I had totally forgotten about that thread!

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like the only difference between the STi kit and WRX kit is the headgasket and intake manifold gaskets...other than that, they look like they both have the same parts in them...

So it is either, buy the STi kit and then purchase WRX intake manifold gaskets, or buy the WRX kit and then purchase STi head gaskets.

I think it also has all the stuff for the heads in it too? Cam seals maybe and that sort of thing. You could always message...I think it is jamie? as subarugenuineparts.com and see what they recommend.

Right, but the WRX kit will not have the correct STi head gasket, and the STi kit will not have the correct intake manifold gasket.

    I'll message Jamie.

For the EJ257 block under EJ205 heads you need the EJ205 gasket kit.

Then get the 11044AA610 (thick) or 11044AA642 (thin) head gaskets.

Any SUBARU engine gasket kit (EJ18#/EJ22#/EJ25#/EJ20#) will have the sealing washers in it.

If you take one off the bolts, it'll have a rubberized center section. Thats what you need.
