Resistor bypass for airbag sensor no longer works

    Hey Everyone,

When I initially installed a new seat, I put a 3.3 ohm resistor (actually three 10 ohm resistors in parallel which is the same thing) in my airbag sensor connector under the seat and it worked as it was supposed to: it made the airbag light go away. Well, I had to put my stock seat back in for a few weeks and I've now re-installed my aftermarket seat and the resistor bypass is not working...I can't get the airbag light to turn off no matter what. I've tried the three 10 ohm resistors again as well as 3.3 ohm resistors and nothing. Disconnecting/reconnecting the battery doesn't seem to work either.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks...

you might actually have an airbag problem, does it go away when you plug the seat back in?

Is something wrong with the other seat?

Test the resistors, one could be out of spec.

He's replaced both front seats with non-airbag seats.

Kevin, you have the proper resistors on both sides correct?

Yeah, I actually plugged the original passenger seat back up to make sure it wasn't a passenger side issue...same thing. I'm going to see if I can get the driver's side plugged back in temporarily and see if that resets anything.

I have indeed checked the resistance of all resistors...all within spec.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

nicad Yes I am a troll

probably just electrically loose, it happens to mine sometimes

There's more than just airbags on the seats that talk to the air bag control module.

Both seat belt buckles talk, both seats have seat position sensors and the passenger seat has an occupant detection system (weight based). All of that works in conjunction to determine what goes off, how hard and when.

Thanks guys - all great info.

I did some more testing and, like WJM says, you do have to have the seat belt buckle sensors connected on both sides AND the passenger side airbag cushion/weight sensor connected as well. I could get the driver's side to work by simply disconnecting the seat belt latch from the stock seat and just connecting it up and laying it under the driver's seat. The problem is with the passenger's seat. The airbag cushion/weight sensor on that side is bradded into a piece that's then welded onto the bottom of the seat....no taking that off very easily.

I guess the real question is, does anyone know of a way to trick that sensor? It's a pretty big wiring harness with 10 or so connection points. Maybe there's an ECU override? If not I guess I'm stuck.

    Just ignore the airbag light.

ALSO you should have someone with a select monitor 3 see what codes you've got.

I actually want the airbags to work when I have my seat/harness setup installed. Therein lies the problem. :hsugh:

    Other thoughts anyone?

SSM3, see what codes you've got and go from there.

I assume this would be available at any local Subaru dealership?

Yes, as it is a REQUIRED tool.

The 06+ impreza interfaces with the SSM2 and 3 instead of the old way of shorting a pin and interpreting the blinking airbag light.

So, it's a tool I can buy? Any idea on cost?

After re-reading what you said WJM I'm thinking you mean I just need to take it to the dealer??

    ^^yes... go see King.

I'm going to bet that the SSM is $$$$

no idea on the SSM2, I'm looking into getting one for myself...

SSM3 COMPLETE dealer setup was $25,000 new. Now you can get the nessisary items to use w/your laptop for around $4500...but you have to be a SUBARU dealer to get it.
