hey guys this is prob. somewhat of a newb question but my rex has high miles everything runs great im running a stage 2 clutch in it right now. what other steps can i take (if any) to keep my tranny running long as possible. Also will an sti 6 speed fit into a buyeye?> any help is great appreciated.
flat4, I think you read too much on NASIOC about peoples trannys blowing up. They are built pretty tough if you don't abuse them like another has said. I've autox'ed mine for a while with stage2 Cobb and clutch and no problems. I have even taken through several rally stages and drag starts at the DoubleX. Just follow your service manual.
Even more than your service manual, I change the transmission fluid with fresh Extra S about every 10,000 miles or when the tranny starts feeling notchy. Its kind of a PITA, but its cheaper than a new transmission.
There are a number of things you need. Check out some of the FAQ's on Nasioc, I am pretty sure you need the rear diff. Typically when you see them for sale, it will be bundled with all you need - rear diff, rear axles, hubs, brakes, DDC controller, ect. (and you will need new wheels since the brakes don't clear the stock 16's). Depending on the deal, typicaly looking at 5K for all parts no labor. At that point you need to decide if you could sell the WRX and pick up a used STI.
there is a lot of research involved in doing a 6MT swap. I did mine 2.5 years ago, and things have changed a little since then. if you can FIND an 07 transmission, use it. won't need to swap out the rear diff, although if you're doing it you might as well do it right. the viscous rear diff sucks. there is a huge FAQ on nasioc for it in the drivetrain section. check it out, I even contributed to it
Woah! That is crazy, especially considering how expensive tranny fluid is. Seems a little compulsive to me, but if it works whatever... I changed mine once since I have owned it at the 60k mark. The fluid just seemed to get better with age, because when I first changed gear shifting to first seemed a little harder. I definitely liked the synchro mesh additive.
you dont need the brembos to use the 6 speed. Although it is nice. Also you dont need the rear diff if you have 2002-2005 wrx. Nor the axles. Now if you use the rear diff you will need the axles and I think Hub.
If you have a bugeye you don't have to touch the rear diff if you get a 2006 or 2007 STi 6 speed. The 2007 6 speed has longer gearing than the 2006 6 speed though.....I personally have the 2007 6 speed and I LOVE IT!
Guys thanks so much and yes ive been reading a lot of horror stories about peoples stock trannys just blowing up when they get the 300Hp mark. ive never launch the cars ususally just downshift from rolls to show those EVO boys who they are messing with. Can anyone suggest the best tranny fluid or any additives?>
There are a few other options as well. If you know you are not going to race or abuse your tranny and want a little insurance but not 100% bullet proof you can do a re-build with JDM STi 5 speed gears. You can usually find those for around $1300 for the gear set w/o labor. You can aslo get PPG gears but that is just as pricey as a 6sp but you retain the longer shift characteristics of the 5sp, better for drag racing. You also don't necessarily need axles, hubs, diff etc. etc. unless you want to swap them.
