I am looking for coilovers for the coupe. Once complete it will have a full WRX swap, vf39, sti cams, M1 subframe and much more. I have narrowed the coilovers down to Megan racing, BC racing, and Stance. Which should I go with and why. pro's and con's from your personal experience and lastly can I get a ride to get first hand feel. I am open to other options and plan to spend 1000-1200. Please back up your recommendations. thanks for the help!
So no where near on par with my TEIN's? While they will see some track not as much as you see when you are in the game.
Megan racing! i just installed mine, thanks to ped, and couldnt be happier. I switched from JIC magics and its a world of difference. Tho the JIC's were blown when i got the car but whatever. PROs -32 levels of dampening my car rides super smooth. -huh they are super cheap -wide range of adjustability -build quality matches competitors. (look better than my old JIC) -Great fitment on car CONs -No camber adjustment plate in the rear. -thats about it, super happy with mine.
The rebound dampning is no existant, they aren't as good as youre Teins and I honestly don't like those either. If you want to do it cheap I would do Springs and Konis or Tokicos if you can't get the Konis. If you are really going to track it a lot just go ahead and save up the 2 grand it takes to get good coil overs. Matt
I have the MR's and after one year, I have gone through two sets of front struts. I would never recommend them to anyone.
we are currently halfway to vegas on the bc's....ride hasnt been half bad even though arkansas sucks i have about 8 or 9k miles on them so far and am very happy with them.
I'm in the same boat as Matt. Teins/MR/BR have super short travel and SUCK for driving on real roads. I used to take flight on a daily basis with my old Tein Flex setup. :unamused: The dips are what kills you, especially on the freeway! And in an autoX, any bump would cause a sudden loss of control. I swapped them out for stock struts with JDM pinks and it was a major improvement. Also, I put some KONI yellows in my '03 on some average springs and they were freaking incredible for a street setup. Highly recommended! If I find some money and want to spend it all on suspension, I'd get the TiC coilovers. Something like 7" of travel and tons and tons of testing on Subarus. But, since I don't see that happening, I'm looking at a set of yellows on USDM Pinks for the Forester.
The BC's suck. I dont care what people say, I've driven 30~40 cars on BC's and they all suck. I cant say anything about the Stance since I have yet to see them. The Off the shelf Megan Street versions from ebay are BETTER than your basic Tein Flex. Once again, I've got two sets, one around 4 years old w/70k miles on them and they got the ever living daylights beat out of them. They still work as if new. No frozen collars, no bad pillow ball mounts. My other set was brand new from ebay, now a year old with 20k on them. Again, i beat the shit out of them: no problems. Both sets feel the same despite their age. Out of 20~30 cars I've driven/seen with Megan's only one had problems: 05 Legacy GT sedan, all 4 were noisy like the damper was loose inside the housing. If you do Koni inserts you MUST use stock style springs. DO NOT USE GROUND CONTROL sleeves or anything of the sort. They have ZERO capability for preload and end up very noisy, sometimes they ride like shit as well. I've never driven/seen one that didnt do this out of the several I've autox'd. If you are going to step it up get the latest Zzyzx. The ones with ride height AND preload adjustments. They are worth their weight in gold.
I have heard that shocks have a range of spring rates that they can handle well. So I would think that your desired spring rate would affect your choice of shock/coilover. What kind of spring rates can these various coilovers handle?
My main concern is quality as they will be used on the street. I could care less how comfortable the ride is as I wont be doing anything crazy on the roads. I do want comparable performance on the track (road course)as my TEIN flex.
In that case, I have heard many people say that koni's will offer superior performance to any of the cheaper coilovers. Just my $0.02.
The Meagan street is the cheapest CO available. The Meagan Super-Race is one step down from the BC. The Stance's are probably similar to the Flex's and my experience with the Stance GR+3way was very positive. I think the KW, RCE, and JRZ are all moving on up from there. I'll probably be running BC or Stance on my GC unless someone gives me $700 for my old D2's and then I'll be running the RCE's. Siegel
Your D2's are better than ANY BC I've driven. The Megan Track coilovers (Super Race) suck unless you set them up right. aka revalve them.
The BC's and Megans are built by the same company. With that being said the BC's are a step up in quality and valving from the megan race coilovers.
rick if those springs that were on your coupe are still in decent condition I may be interested in them. I'll check them out sunday
