So I took my 02 WRX in (I will not name the shop to procect them) to have the TSB for the fuel leak done - had to remove intake to do. It has 83K miles on it. During reassembly a nut was dropped down the intake. The shop is being cool about it and will take care of everyting (incl. rental car), but he says engine must be pulled and the head taken off to get to the nut.

Here is where I would like some input. While it is out what should be done to it from a PM standpoint. I am thinking timing belt, water pump, idler, ect. Also clutch (still original). Anyone have any other ideas?

That is what the guy told me. I am guessing that they had tried all that before they contacted me.

Definately the clutch since its original. Are the other parts mentioned original as well? If so , then replace them too. If they have less than 20k on them I wouldn't replace them.

at least they discovered the problem. I've personally seen this happen twice and the results are never good if the engine is ran with the object in teh combustion chamber.

This one. My clutch is just starting to slip, and just over 100k miles, so I am getting a new clutch, timing belt, etc.

    Speaking of...get my PM Mike?

haha^ yeah I would also recommend at least a clutch and might as well do the others while it's out if you can afford to

Yes, all other parts are original. I looked on subarugenuineparts.com for prices. Looks like:

Clutch, PP, release bearing - 326 total
Timing belt, tensioner, water pump - 306 total.

2 questions - 1. what are your thoughts about cam seals, crank seals, and idlers if they aren't leaking, ect?
    2. How much would be reasonable labor time to do the clutch and timing belt on an engine out of the car?

Also what about thermostat - any advantage of doing this now or is it easy to do with engine in?

I would approach them first and see if they would be willing to do those things while the engine is out and if labor is negotiable. If it is a dealer they will usually have set prices.

Though I haven't gotten a quote yet, he did mention doing the other head gasket also. I didn't think the 2.0's were prone to problems. What do you think?

From what I have heard the head gaskets usually aren't an issue, could be wrong but I asked a few reputable folks that same qa and they indicated that they usually are not a weekpoint. It is thee best time to do a clutch though.

Just to close the story, fuel line fixed, new clutch and flywheel, 2 new headgaskets, timing belt, tensioner, water pump, ect. Car runs good. A bit more than I had hoped - $1500 for additional work, but hopefully I am good for a long time. BTW, I priced the parts and had gotten to about $1100 in parts from subarugenuineparts.com. So, I payed them $400 for pulling engine and heads. Not too bad in the big picture.

As a happy aside to the story, SOA is repaying me for the original repairs - total of $455. Props to them.

New clutch is so smooth! I had an early '02 that there was a TSB for chatter (I guess actually the flywheel). I never realized how bad it was until now!
