I was just curious has anyone ever ran ceramic brakes on there car before, and what you thought about them?
Currently I am running hawk ceramic brakes pads on my sti. I like them they produce a lot less dust than stock brembo pads. The wheels stay clean much longer. I feel like they brake better than the stock ones, but the stock brembo pads were pretty much gone when I changed them.
Have you put them under heavy load, and high speed stopping. I have heard that they have a tendency of feeling soft at high speeds? this was also coming from a VW GTI owner.
Honestly, I have not done high speed braking test on purpose but I do not feel that the brakes are feel soft when I brake heavy.
This is probably a dumb question, do all ceramic brakes glow when put under lots a pressure. Like you see in posters and pictures. Or is that gear more toward racing application.
I am no expert, but I don't think it is the brake pads that glow during heavy braking. When that pressure is clamped down on the Rotor, the friction causes the rotor to heat up to astonishing temperatures, causing the Rotor to glow. This will happen with any brake setup if enough friction is produced for a long enough period of time. When I lived in PA, I would drive down a mountain at night a lot, and my parents neighborhood was right at the bottom of the mountain. By the time I got all the way down and parked my car, the rotors would sometimes be glowing, and would continue for another 30 seconds or so after I got out of the car.
Less dusting Quieter Ability to handle higher brake temperatures with less heat fade Provide faster recovery after the stop Generate less dust and wear on both the brake pads and rotors According to durability tests, ceramic compounds extend brake life compared to most other semi-metallic and organic materials and outlast other premium pad materials by a significant margin – with no sacrifice in noise control, pad life or braking performance.
Been running ceramic pads on my wrx for a while now with no complaints. My impression is that they are very consistent. I don't do too many high speed hard stops on the street, but they have always done just fine when I had to. I would look at changing to braided lines and high temp synthetic brake fluid. Those seem to make quite a difference also.
Continuing my search for knowledge from 3 years ago...... Are special rotors required in order to switch to ceramic? I bought a civic for my daily commuter, and I am about to change both rotors and pads on the car. I am planing on putting the Hawk ceramic pads on. Unless someone advises me of something cheaper or better or both. This is just my daily commuter, its got a whopping 115 hp. Just want the ceramic for longevity.
Just get the cheap stuff from pep boys. They'll last you plenty unless you drive like an asshole between every red light and just daily commute.
ADvance Auto chinese (motherland) rotos and Ceramic pads on the Van. They work awesome for a DD. Buy online and pickup in store using promo code CCabin and get $40 off $100 purchase.
Awesome, thanks guys. Next project will be to research best ways to get better gas mileage out of a civic, without turning it into some mad bumble-bee and without emptying my pockets.
if it's non-stop point to point otherwise not really. I've noticed in the Justy that it equals out the same mileage to cost wise but it runs better on premium.
