So, I have been wanting to get a PS3 for a while, I didn't have the money available when they came out. I decided to pick one up the other day off of ebay. I decided on ebay because I wanted an older 60Gb unit that was fully backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games. The newer ones are not at all...which is ghey. I was seeing everything from $600+ to around $425.00. I did a good bit of "shopping" before finally deciding on a seller with a good reputation and return/exchange/warranty etc... I got it in the mail the other day, plugged everything up and got going just fine. It was late so I didn't spend much time with it, but it was awesome! Then last night I come home and get on it, and not ten minutes into GTA it locks up. No big deal, I re-load and it locks up again even quicker...it just goes down hill from there, finally ending with the 80010514 error message that I have now become very familiar with. The seller has given me very good customer service so far, every message I have sent to them has been returned within minutes. They offer repair or exchange for free up to 90 days, so I am sending it back to them (at my cost:unamused. Hopefully I will get a working unit in return. However, I am prepared for the worst...getting a another faulty unit back from the seller. At that point I would probably send it off to Sony for $150.00 and have it replaced by them. I guess this is the chance you take when buying used electronics off ebay. Has anyone else had issues with their PS3? Marc
Ya seems to have a life of about 1 year give or take. My old roommate had the same problem as well as one of my friends. Same thing with the locking up till it won't even start the disk. Has something to do with the laser I believe. The friend sent it into sony and had them fix it, my old roommate is trying to fix it himself. (not sure I agree with it but hey). I have a couple of months left and I will actually chuckle if it happens to me.
My PS3 locks up from time to time, especially when playing GTA IV online. It has been doing it much more lately with the newest software update.
It seems like the ratio of good to bad consoles, with the older units, is about 2:1. For every good consol there are two bad ones. I don't think that the newer units are as buggy as the original run. I just wish that all were backwards compatible. From what I have been reading, there are a range of possible problems and fixes for this error code (80010514) which is a kind of catch all error code for a few things. It is basicly just saying "hey, I can't read this disk"... Damaged Hard Drive - replace hard drive Dirty Lense - clean the lense Bad Firmware install - replace hard drive Do a google search on "80010514" Since I don't have a warranty to void, I am not opposed to trying to fix it myself either. If the replacement unit I get back from the seller ends up having problems, I will probably try to fix it myself before sending it to Sony.
A little different, but I have fixed multiple 360s with RROD. Its not that hard if you have instructions to go buy.
THIS SHOULD WORK!!! Try this...on the left side you will see a little door with a HDD sticker. Open it...CAREFULLY remove the set screw, remove the HDD and blast that bitch and the PS3 w/ a can of compressed air. Edit: I've had mine since launch day.
Had mine for a year with no issues.. its the 80gb though. And as far as backwards compatability, I've tried at least 10 PS2 games that have played no problem... So, not sure why everyone thinks there is issues with that.
The 60GB is the only unit that actually contains the emotion engine and is the "most" backwards compatible...the 80GB has a software emulator of the engine, and there are a smaller percentage of games that it works with. Now, none of the consoles are backwards compatible. I sent the unit off yesterday to the seller.
I would have if I had seen the post before I sent it out. Thanks for the advice though. I am prepared to have to go through all of this again at some point in the future, so i am sure I will get to try that again.
mine works... but locks up on playing GT4 occasionally. also, all ps3s will play ps1. they took out ps2 chip most likely cause ps2s are still selling very well.
Good to hear, glad you got that worked out... Been playing Tiger Woods 09' non stop for the past few weeks.. getting ready for the masters
