I need a good place that will powder coat my wheels. I want to do it gloss black. Any suggestions? A few questions: 1. Do they have to remove my tire? 2. What will happen to my car as they coat the wheels? 3. How long does it usually take? (estimation) 4. Is powdercoating long-lasting? Thanks all!
1. yes 2. what happen? your drop the wheels off and leave it at the shop 3. i'd say a week to 10 days 4. yes
that is a question you are going to have to answer for yourself. If you want something that lasts and doesn't chip, then painting is not your solution. If you don't mind touching up the wheels every once in a while then by all means paint them, worst case is you take it to the powdercoater some time later. Be warned that if you are going to get new tires soon because you might arrive at the situation that with your new tires on the wheels are chipped to hell and needs to be powdercoated then you might have to remove the new tires that you just spent money mont and balanced and do it again after the wheels are coated. So if you want to coat the wheels, do it when the old tires are off. First hand experience lol.
Miller Powder Coating did Milos wheels a long time ago. He was very happy with the service. I believe it cost him somewhere around $50 per wheel. Miller Powder Coating 4251-B Wayside Ct Lilburn, GA 30047 770-931-1505
Yep I used millers as well they charged me 240 for the set but now it is up to 260 and took about 2 weeks. I have the gloss black and like it.
i have painted my share of wheels and even if you go crazy and sand prime paint and clear them they still will chip with time and look like crap... save yourself the trouble and save up and do the powder coating, it will be well worth it
Contact Greg over at DGS Powdercoating. He's done two sets of wheels for me and they look great. You'll have to remove your tires yourself. The last set of wheels he did for me took him only 4 days to turn around and cost me just $45 a wheel, though this price will vary depending on the powder you want. http://dgspowdercoating.net
It also depends on what you want to use the wheels for...DD? Track / auto-x? I have a second set of wheels / tires and don't really care what they look like as they're only on the car for a day or so at a time (track / auto-x / mtn run). Painted in high-temp black works fine for me.
