I've always been traditional and took my car to SoG for regular maintenance, but I think I'm about to start doing a lot of this on my own. I googled Motul 5w30 synthetic to see where to pick some up, but there came back with multiple Motul synthetics at that weight. Does anybody know the 'correct' (saying this loosely) Motul oil to put in your car? And where to get it? Also, do I need to swing by the dealership to get the filter or is that something you can pick up at Advanced, Wal-Mart, etc. Thanks in advance
Asking for advice on oil on the internet will get you a bunch of opinions. Fist I will answer your question and then give you my opinion. Only certain places carry motul. I think SOG is one of the few around. Someone can chime in and correct if desired. As far as what oil to use, much info out there. Seems that maybe mobil 1 5-30 isn't the best for our cars - a bit too thin. The Castrol 0-30 (german made) available at autozone seems to have good buzz. Also the Rotella's and Penziol Platinum are highly regarded. Me, I use the GC (German castrol) or the shell Rotella 5-40 synthetic (though until recently it was a diesl only formulation that was not so good on our cats - that may have recently changed though - if you have aftermarket catless - no worrys). The GC is about $6.5 / quart at autozone only. The Rotella t 5-40 can be found in a 4 quat at walmart for about $18. I think you can pick up a single quart at Autozone or Advanced - I can't remember which. I would suggest reading some of the service and maintenance on NASIOC (bluesubie is very knowledgeable) or if you want mind blowing amounts of information go to bobistheoilguy.com . I would highly encourage you to do this. If you like cars, it is fun, rewarding, and saves a bit of $. If you need help, I am sure some of the members here are more than willing. One other thing I would recommend investing in is a set of ramps (I use the rhino ramps available at autozone, advanced, ect) or jack / jackstands. Oilchanging would be difficult / impossible without these.
Shell Rotella 5w-40 has always been an old standby for me. Its cheap and made from the tears of angels. Really...its that good. And you can get it at WalMart.
Just got back from SoG picking up my Motul for the 4th or 5th time I suppose...It's on sale cheaper than usual, $38 for 5L. Of course that's still very $$$ compared to a lot of oil but it makes me feel better about bumping that 7K line so I'll deal with it . Don't forget to get your filter and 50 cent crush washer while you're there. Cheapest I could find it online was $35 with *gasp* $20 shipping!! If you're far from SoG take out a loan and pick up a bunch of it in one trip :wiggle: Oh and fyi confirming 8100 Eco-energy 5W30
My car loves Rotella. Case and point after 3k on the oil, SS did 37 dyno pulls on my car. King changed it yesterday it still looked pretty good. Not bad for $20 an oil change.
if Mobil1's 5w30 is thin, wouldn't 0w30 be thinner than that? I'm gonna try out Motul this time. I used GC 0w30 in my previous car and had zero oil burning. Recently, Autozone raised the price of GC to $6.99/qt. That's like $35 bucks for each oil change! I rather pay 3 bucks more and get more superior Motul.
Regular ole Castrol Syntec works great for me... $20 for a 5qt jug and comes out clean after 3 or 4k...
I think I'm going to stick with Motul...everybody has positives and negatives to say on just about every kind of oil, but I rarely hear of negatives on Motul. Maybe it's just me, but I don't mind spending the extra $10-20 per change (talking like $100 / year at most) to keep my car running well. If I was concerned over $5 per oil change, I would be driving a $3,000 beater, not a $30,000 race car.
Breaks down very quickly from oil reports on the internet. I use GC 0w30 and change it every 5K. Its expensive but after spinning a bearing using Royal Purple and burning oil with Mobil 1 I'll pay the little bit of extra money for the protection.
anther vote for shell rotella 5w-40 synthetic. I guess i can try the GC 0w-30 next before it gets hot again and see how the car likes it. I like the Rotella because of the 2nd highest rating in amount of anti-wears it has it....good thing.
I have one concern of motul, is it too race oriented? Case and point is their brake fluid, it absorbs lots of amounts of moisture so that it will need more bleeding often (more hardcore than ATE)...so would the same principle of that race teams changes oil often so that it might not be too great for street cars? My speculation continues... I think it just changed recently to settle into a new group of oil, something of less zinc and phosphorus IIRC Did it not look as black as other oil? I was told or thought that you want the oil to change color so that all the sludge and deposits are in the oil instead of the motor
I've been using Royal Purple without problems, but I'm going to see what happens after I drain it this weekend. I can't afford the shit now.
so GC 0w-30 runs strong on subaru's? I also think it would be a bit on the thin side might change my oil it this weekend, need your input guys
Ain't no sludge in my motor! HA! My motor is pretty clean inside I usually change the oil way too often. I used mobil one for a minute and that stuff got eaten up. Don't get me wrong the Rotella was dirty but reasonably so and still seemed nice in consistency didn't pour out like water. It's especially good if you change your oil every 3k-3.5k so your not swapping at $50ish bucks a pop.
