I shifted to second and heard a loud pop/snap. As I rolled to a stop there was a loud rattle from under the hood. Second gear is gone and it seems the scrap is jamming the other gears. I tried moving it forward in first and it started off smooth but then it started to make bad noises. I parked it and now I am looking for my best option. -Does anyone have a used 5mt laying around? -How could I replace the broken parts cheaply? -Six speed would be great but I don't have the money....so no go. I got laid off in December so this is going to hurt no matter what.
PPGs are getting installed. Hopefully they will be in my car this weekend and I'll have the transmission thats in my car now available for Sean.
ouch... I bet by late March I'll have my entire drivetrain available... probably won't be in time to help you though. Sorry.
It will if you are changing out your rear diff as well. Your transmission will have to go with your rear diff.
Sorry to hear this Sean! I lost my job as well and this is my biggest car fear. We should start a charity fund for unemployed Subaru owners with 5MT's. I am not available this weekend. If the swap is to occur next week or weekend and you need an extra hand please let me know. Give me a couple days notice. I would be more than happy to help!
The car has 133,000 miles on it so I have been trying to baby the 5mt but it let go anyway. I'm only running 8 psi of boost on my 2.5 so when I bump up the power to 18 psi I might be going through this again. An install day is not out of the question as I don't have the confidence to do this tranny swap myself. I was trading trannies on my dad's 240Z solo 1/2 car when I was 12 but that was a different ball of wax and a number of years ago. Practice makes perfect and we did it a lot. On another note the car is about 1/2 mile from my house. I don't want to try and drive the car because of the possibility of damaging other gears in the set with pieces of 2nd. Is there a chance I might damage other components? If my mechanical knowledge is up to snuff it seems that if I pull the car with all four wheels on the ground the output shaft will still be turning. Is their a chance of doing more damage this way? Is a 1/2 mile jaunt on a tow truck the safest route?
Looks like I am going to buy liquidforce's tranny and he is going to do the install at his house for me.
Yeah and then Mike probably would have helped you out with the motor as well. Glad to hear you got everything worked out.
