It's finally happening. Im getting annoyed by the highway drone of the FXT. It seems with the age the exhaust, it has gotten louder. I have heard of this happening. i was looking for ideas, that dont include replacing my entire TBE, to quiet the drone. I know my first hurdle is the size. My TBE consists of 3" Helix catted DP, 3" WBR mid-pipe (no resonator), and 3" WBR axle back. I was thinking of trying to wedge a 2.5" pipe with a resonator or a 2.5" backbox to see if that helped. I am still using stock length hangers but would be worried to lower the exhaust any more and question how much sound change would really occur. It's to the point Im thinking of throwing the stock AB on there just to save my ears at 60 MPH. Anyone want to play swap some parts and see what happens? :wavey: Ideas? :eek3:
Take the mid-pipe to a muffler shop and have them weld in a resonator. Should help tremendously with the drone problem.
Yeah, you can get a SS 3" resonator for like $35. Just have a muffler shop weld one in and it will make a world of difference. Just take it to a good muffler shop.
Ok, Dynamat can get expensive and there is a LOT to cover in the cargo area. Anyone have experience with how much one might need and how effective it really is? hnoes: The mid-pipe part sounds like a good idea. Anyone have a muffler shop they know will do this, or do pretty much any muffler shops do this? :dunno I hate to replace the axleback, but I would to get better sound. Maybe I'll see if I can find any Fozzy owners wanting something louder!? :ugh:
take off the rear axle back and straight pipe it so there is no back pressure.... super loud out the back but quiet inside!!!

I'd find someone with a resonated midpipe that wants your midpipe and swap. I'd do it but I have this stupid APS system and I think it won't fit. I know the downpipe is funky... I'd like a little more sound....
My midpipe is FXT specific, it would bolt in without any changes (except for adapters). I had the AB on first. Then the mid-pipe and added the DP a few months later. So if your system is different, I dont think it will work. Xanrules: do you have the resonator or the mid-pipe with resonator? Thanks!
ride in Matt 2.5RS's car. Yours will sound Lexus quite after that! IMy WRX had a resonator on a 3" system and it still droned on the highway. Fortunately my system had a silencer but that litterly took away 10 whp when installed.
I have the Blitz NUR Spec Touring (has the fat can) and it's very quiet. I don't even hear it inside the car.
I just cant afford those kind of componets right now. Im looking for more "economical" solutions. hnoes: Plus, being back in the dating world, I'd like to be able to have a conversation with my date if at all possible. :naughty:
Sounds like having a long resonator will be your best option. Something like this Vibrant resonator. Guys on IWSTI have great success with these. I'm sure it can be had for cheaper. This was just the first one that I found with a google search. http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/VIB1795.htm
Yardhippie, contact the guy on the ebay listing I gave you. He said he can make them in any length you desire. If you want, I will go in with you and that should bring down the shipping costs. Then take your car over to Nicad and give him a 12 pack to weld it on for you. I think that would be your cheapest alternative.
I would do a Good Resonator, And Dynamat the crap out of the car I remember a year or 2 ago when i was a TopSpeed. I had a customer that had a 02 wrx wagon. That he drives the SC weekly from Atlanta. Wanted to quiet it down for conference calls. Jason installed 2 Bulk packs of Dynamat. (Doors, Under the carpet, Roof, Trunk, Everywhere!) It made a difference of 3-4 DB's Thats huge. The added weight was only about 60lbs. Not a big deal.
I went back to the MFG of my mid-pipe, seems like there is a 16" resonator already in place. I didnt think there was one. http://www.wbrperformance.com/wbr/product/f9638664-698a-4cd6-8c05-daeb1fd73dc8.aspx You think I would remember, I installed it. :dunno So, it looks like its Dynamat or some such sound dampening or changing the axle back.
