I was on craigslist last night and saw someone had posted a free wrx motor with engine stand. Went and picked it up last night and the engine stand is brand new and the motor has about 75k on it. Thinking of doing a Cosworth 2.2 stroker kit. Just wondering if anyone has any input. I would like to run a rotated 30r. Or should I just go with forged internals?
Free is nice but the 2.0 liter blocks don't really make that great of a motor even built. There isn't enough support around the cylinder walls and they tend to crack the bores or come out of round.
Its a whole motor. Heads, sti oil pan, everything. I kind of want to do a built 2.0 just to be different. Everyone always throws in a 2.5. I know why but I still want to stick with the 2.0 platform. I will post pictures later tonight.
There is a reason people spend the time and money to build a 2.5. Seriously I wouldn't spend the money to build a 2.0. I have given away plenty of 2.0 short blocks because they have no value. The real score you have is the heads and the engine stand. The heads can get you 300 in stock form if they are in good shape and with just a little work can be improved greatly. To me the ej20 is only worth its weight in aluminum at a recycler.
Once you get to a 20g sized turbo on a 2.5 with ej20 heads you start missing out on some real power in the upper rpms without head work.
If you want to build a 2.0, the 205 is not the best place to start. Good find, it's gotta be nice just to have the motor so you can take it apart and learn how to rebuild from scratch
Iirc they are the same block as the sti's just no forged internals. They're the previous year model legacy motors.
They are forged rods in the 2.5L WRX I believe. Higher compression than STi 8.4:1 vs 8.2:1 and tamer cams.
The guy said it ran great when it was pulled. But that is taking his word for it. Anything I can do to check it out with out actually installing it?
Depending on the year of the heads they could be worth 300 alone. If Slowrx is offering 500 I would take that offer though
I think I am gonna get rid of my 2 2.0l shortblocks. I am just gonna maintain the current motor in the L. Both of mine are known bad but could be use to make one good short block. Perhaps the buyer of your motor would want to pick up mine super cheap for parts as well. And yeah the heads alone are worth at least 300 if not more. Depending on year/mileage
I think I would rather hold onto it than let it go for 300. I should be able to get more. Hopefully slowwrx wants it.
I paid LiquidForce $300 for the good set of shimless WRX heads he had so your entire engine is worth a good $500.
