So I was driving back from Midtown with a blinking Cruise Control light and the CEL... and the idle was crappy... the car stalled multiple times on the way home, but we got here... It's a 2005 STi with a downpipe and a protune from Scott Seigal... After putting my Accessport on the car, realized I was getting 3 codes: 0138/153/31 From my limited research, I think all of these have to do with the front O2 sensor... Who on the boards can help replace these things... I really don't have the mula to take it to the Steelership... I got limited funds, but some cash to share with a helper... if that's what it takes!
Wirelessly posted Dude, it is simple to change the front o2 sensor. you just need to find an o2 sensor socket. what part of town are you in?
Well, my car is at my condo off of Collier Rd. (close to Howell Mill Rd on 75). I don't have any tools here... just a few hand tools. Unfortunately I'm in Alabama right now with my wifey doing father's day stuff with our families... heading back to ATL tonight... I'm probably gonna have to drive my wife's car to work on Monday. Integroid, you interested in helping?
I will have time over the 4th of July weekend but I am sure you are wanting to get it done before that. Seriously though...the hardest part will be jacking up the car and getting the splash shield off.
It stalls at idle? Sorry I missed your call on the 21st -- I am and still am out of town for a car show in Denver, CO. Currently in Kansas.
Humm...just checked on the codes and P0138 is the rear O2 sensor and P0153 is the front O2 sensor. Are you sure you dont have any frayed wires or your rear O2 sensor is not shorting out on anything? Have you tried to reset the ecu and see which code comes back on. You should carry your AP with you so you can check the code as soon as your CEL comes on. If it is the rear O2 sensor, it will take you ten minutes.
yeah the rear is easy..the front it is helpful to have a 22mm (IIRC) closed end wrench with a slight bend...I have one and yes carry the AP with you so you can pull the code right then. There are several of us willing to lend a hand if you need :wavey:
If you replace the o2 sensor make sure you use a oem part. Aftermarket stuff just doesnt work well on subaru when it comes to important stuff that that
Well, I spoke with Ped on the phone earlier today and he brought up an interesting point... something that I need to check. We were talking about the oil change/brake pad maintenance I just had and I mentioned that the mechanic also changed out my air filter (that i had sitting in the trunk)... Ped suggested that the mechanic MAY (hopefully) have unplugged the MAF plug for some reason before getting the air box open and (hopefully) didnt' plug it all the way back in. I'm in my wife's car today because I really dont' like revving the engine at every light, however, I'm probably gonna head back to town from work a little early and just check around the engine for any loose wires... esp the MAF plug. When I reset my codes the last time and cranked the car the idle was still messy but the CEL didn't come back right away (haven't really touched the car since saturday). Like I said, I'll hopefully get home early today and check out the MAF plug and anything else that may have come loose, and I'll try and check for frayed wires too (FACKKKKKKKKKKKKK). Anyone near Howell Mill want to help me deduce the issue this afternoon/evening? I'll post up of course if I figure out it's just a plug. Another thing I may mention is that when it happenned (at least as far as I know - since the stall was really the first sign...) I was on Peachtree with 4 peopel in the car, at high noon (97 degrees outside) with the air on full blast. The A/c kinda flickered (a couple of non-a/c gusts came through the vents) and then the car stalled.
Well... disconnected the battery and checked the MAF plug... all seems fine with it. Front O2 sensor seems to have all its sheething still intact (from what I can see from the engine bay). I drove the car for a couple miles around my place and it still STALLs every time that I let off of the gas pedal. Basically at idle, it dies. AND when I was driving around, the exhaust note is kinda gurgully, and the car "bucks" between 0-2500 RPM. Help... please... I'm looking for a used front O2 sensor if anyone has one sitting around or I guess I'll have to get one from SOG or maybe order one online... FACKKKKKKK (again).
You really need to diagnose what is exactly wrong first. It might not be an O2 sensor at all and the front O2 sensor is really expensive new. Are you sure you did not blow off a vacuum hose somewhere? Do you have the APv2? If so, why are you disconnecting the battery? You can reset the ecu through the AP. You need to get it to throw a code and check what code it is with the AP.
I got a new one that was direct fit and was a denso (like the OEM subaru one) from O2sensors.com. Was quite a bit cheaper than the dealership and had zero problems out of it. Just a thought.
Well, I sure hope it's not the O2 sensor, but I really don't know how to check for anything else I disconnected the battery because I thought it was a good idea to do that before unplugging/plugging back the MAF plug. I have an AP v1. I tried to get it throw another code by driving it around but no luck. And at this point, I'm kinda nervous to drive the darn thing, because it cuts out all the darn time... I'm open to ANY suggestions...
Well, if I can't find an front o2 sensor used, i'll have to pick one up at the stealership in the AM... anyone wanna volunteer to come out to my condo complex and change it out? I know it's a long shot... I just dont' have the jackstands/jack/tools... Based on the rich fuel smell and the codes, I am really leaning towards it being the o2 sensor...
Also, call www.subarupartspro.com. You can have it the next day since they are in NC and it will save you a ton of money. Or see if SOK or SOG will match their prices. A lot of times Lisa at SOG will match their price if you ask her.
I think that with the throttle issues and what looks like the system running very rich, that the main issue is the front one. If I replace that, and still have the other issue, I will jump off that bridge, then...
WHere did you find that price? I just looked it up on their website and got this. Oxygen sensor, forester, front, w/turbo 04-07 $143.96 Order By Description. Forester, Impreza, Legacy, baja turbo motors all use the same Front O2 sensors. Give them a call to confirm but I am almost positive MSRP is $200. Get it for $150 and then take whoever puts it on out to dinner with the saved money.
OK, talked to Lisa at SOG and she was able to work with the price some... got it down to $160. SO, I'm going to pick up the sensor during lunch, and now the question... Can anyone with a jack and the O2 socket help this evening? PLEEEEEEEASE I live down the street from Felini's on Howell Mill, and can spring for a slice and beer for sure!
Well, I picked up the sensor at SOG this afternoon ($169 with tax) and spoke with El Presidente, Alex, and he may be able to come over and help today. Either that, or Ped will be able to help tomorrow or Thurs... Sooner's better than later b/c my wife is gonna kill me if she doesn't get her car back asap! Either way, thanks for all of the help and I'll let you all know how it goes!
Can't you just throw a resistor in where it plugs in like when going catless up pipe, or am I thinking of something different?
So, jesus888 and Alex replaced the 02 sensor with no change. Then I went to join the fun, and we swapped my known good MAF with his, and it fixed the issue. He is stealing Alex's MAF for the next day, and is going to try to clean his to see if that will fix it.
Well, thanks for the update Brett! You stole my Thunder!!!! Just kidding... thanks for coming by and helping with the diagnosis... I just got Alex's MAF sensor in there and it runs like a charm. Gonna read up on cleaning the MAF sensor and gonna try that tomorrow during lunch! Hopefully I won't have buy another sensor.............. too bad we kinda facked up the old O2 sensor...
I am sure it is not a bad thing to replace it in the long run Oh well. Glad we were able to work something out!
