Question: why is everyone calling this a coup? Am I missing something on the angle, here?

No you arent missing anything. Its not a Coup. He was removed from power legally for breaking the law. It seems pretty simple to me, but maybe I'm missing something.

Well, Obama seems to know something we don't. He's calling it a coup and demanding on the authority of a mini u.n. (just for us in the western hemisphere) that this guy be reinstated.

    this!!!

also when they took the president down, the Nancy Pelosi of their country took over power, not the VP, which is one reason the Honduran people are so upset.

my GF taught english down there for a couple of years and is still in contact with students and parents, they are pissed.

The problem with the big stick is that you have to have a President thats got the Balls to blow some shit up. I don't see that happening with Obama

But, didn't Obama himself say that it is wrong for the United States to meddle in other countries internal affairs? Did he not use this as an excuse for not vocally supporting the Iranians when they began protesting the elections and the Government sanctioned the use of force against the population? At this point, this is still his doctrine on Iran, yet he has no problem meddling in the internal affairs of Israel and Honduras.

It is not in any way a "Speak softly and carry a big stick" policy, it is utter hypocrisy, plain and simple.

the same reason we're not meddling in Iranian affairs, apparently.

    ----------

Lets review what happened for those who didn't know.

President of Honduras tried to get a referendum (law change) going to change the Constitution's limit on presidential terms.

The Constitution states anyone doing so must immediately resign any elected office they currently hold to pursue it. He didn't.

The Hondurian legislation and Supreme Court both checked the president and said this was illegal and unconstitutional.

President ignored them and ordered a military general to carry out the referrendum. The general refused and the president fired him.

The legislation re-hired him after declaring his firing was unconstitutional, and then ordered the military to detain the president for breaking the law and for treason. They put him under guard and then forced him out of the country with no fighting. The military did not install themselves into power afterward. Yet for some reason, this part is why everyone else is calling this a coup...

We need to figure our how big business and big religion corrupted our system, return it back to the American people, close our borders and get our shit straight before we go out telling other people how to handle their affairs. Both the Republicans and Democrats have Fubar'd this country based on special interest, hidden agendas and pandering to big business and big government. American public has to unstupify themselves, figure out this is a one party system and find a better system returning us to the fundamentals of our forefathers who actually created this country to avoid what we are now experiencing: a combination of corporate fascism and European socialism. Essentially America has lost its identity and if people don't wake the Fu># up we will loose our country........

i blame all voters. They over empathise with elected officials instead of distrusting all of them, like they should.

Mad Mallard, I'm glad to see that there is some one on here that takes an interest in current global affairs. You my friend along with a few others here show that there is still hope in our generation to step up and call bullshit when they see it.
Now if you remember during the election there was a big stink about the "idiot" having a domestic terrorist going to Chavezstad for an educational forum. He wants to normalize relations with Cuba, hamstring "Big Oil" and you wonder why he isn't siding with the people of Honduras?

Don't worry guys! I am sure our Commander in Cheif will use the current crisis in Honduras to host a "town hall discussion" on only 1 media outlet for a few hours so everyone can talk about their feelings. And if we are lucky, maybe he will kill another fly! Because, Lord knows, there is nothing else more newsworthy!

I guess I couldn't see the forest for the trees, but as I look more at 'the world' condemning this so called coup, its basically all populists and people who favour mob rule over rule of law.

Basically, the kind of people that think that the United States is a democracy, or should be a Democracy.

So, I have a question to anyone who thinks the ousted president should be 're installed' by foreign nations:

If George W Bush, who won a large popular vote margin against John Kerry, decided that he was going to sell Alaska to Russia. The Supreme court ruled in a case that the President didn't have the authority, and then Congress passed a bill that stated as much. Then Bush decides to use the military to start evicting Alaskans anyways. Congress then holds impeachment proceedings, successfully makes the case and Bush is 'removed' from office.

Then China, Russia, and Canada come along and all wave their 'naughty naughty' fingers at us, telling us we better reinstate Bush because 'the people' voted for him, and you have to respect the will of the people...What would we expect our government to do?

Mad Mallard - I think that is a pretty good analogy. But, this is the ONLY place I have heard people talking about how the country was right to kick out the president. It seems like EVERY media outlet seems to be on the other bandwagon. WTF?!?

The media outlets peddle entertainment. Nothing but editorials masquerading as news. Who cares about the facts it's all about how I feel. There is more information in this thread then you can find through any of the "media outlets" individually. I love this community.

You know. I don't think Obama is an idiot, I think he's inexperienced and wrong. I don't think he surrounds himself with idiots (except maybe Geitner).

The only explanation I can come up with is that we now have our thumb directly on top of this ousted president, and we're now applying pressure to him directly in exchange for trying to get him back into power. A crafty tactic, but very very disingenuous to what Obama was campaigning on during the elections.

I mean, after all, isnt this the kind of behavior that liberals typically decry American foreign policy as engaging in?

Update: Republican senator Jim DeMint and 16 other senators are finally saying something against supporting the ousted president!

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/21/AR2009072101860.html

"DeMint and other Republicans have said they believe Hondurans were acting lawfully when they ousted Zelaya after he had sought to hold a referendum on overhauling the constitution to allow his re-election.

"President Obama rushed to side with Chavez and Castro before getting the facts. Now it's clear that the people of Honduras were defending the rule of law," DeMint said on Tuesday."

  29. So we thought, now look at us because we stuck our nose in other peoples business and spend so much money on things that had absolutely nothing to do with us, we have this outragoeous national debt. What does obama due then, make the US dollar worth absolute shit.

Its Obama dude, enough said.... I thought we all knew by now that he is full of it. Cause tomorrow I am gonna wake up and my bills will be paid. (is it obvious I dont like him)

    Amen!

Tell me about it, as I type co-workers of mine are currently speaking about it, save me.......
