So we are redoing the backyard at our house, new landscaping and patio etc. Along with those things the wife wants I've been thinking about building an outdoor kitchen....or Manchen. So heres what I'm thinking so far, A big charcoal grill, stacked stone with fire bricks on the inside, I also want to build a brick smoker, big enough to do a whole hog is I want to. So the question is, has anyone else here taken on a similar project.
just checked, no big tanks at work. sorry but I would roll with stone anyway for a smoker pit. do an offset box with temperature controls and a built in spit and rack. might as well do an outdoor kitchen of sorts with a place to trim/prep/carve things wish I could do it at my place, but my backyard is graded so fucking retarded. steep grade and slopes down to a creek. if I do it over I'm building my own place. it's going to be small (under 2000 sqft) with a 4 car garage, full basement. I don't need much living space, but I need a lot of play space
I had dreams of doing an outdoor kitchen but after looking at how much it was going to cost, I just pimped out my indoor kitchen. I got everything I ever wanted except for a commercial grade wok burner. No, not the crap that Viking and Wolf sell....I am talking about a real 100,000 btu commercial wok burner. The wok burner wasn't too bad price wise, the insulation to make is pass fire codes was going to be too much. Plus I ran out of room....I needed about another 24" in width. Ill check out the photos for sure. Our indoor kitchen is ok, we had only planned to live in this house for a couple of years but the current situation is going to require us to stay here atleast another 5 so I figure I might as well atleast build the grill I want. The landscaping isn't a problem by anymeans I was more interested in smoker and grill design. If anyone wants help building a house or needs one built I can help with that, we built over 100 homes in a little less than 4 years. I've got pulling permits and working zoning boards down.
wow, just checked out the pics, turned out very nice. When we built our house we made the kitchen pretty large and designed it exactly how we wanted it....now I hate it

I've got a good cabinet guy when you decide, he does everything from builder grade to high end. The stuff we put in our house wasn't that high end but it looks really nice.
With trying to get the bastard child done and the run this weekend time is short, but lets get together one weekend and do a little backyard brainstorming. I'll try to dig up some former customer pics, and JR does a pig about once a month in his setup so he'll be wealth of knowledge.
Go to Varasano's....it will convince you about getting a real brick oven...the char on the crust is so amazingly delicious

It's all about the resources, you know how it is, materials cheap, labor is the cost. Just get a couple of "rent a drunks" and or amigo's show the beer then the plans. After it's done give them beer. Just a suggestion, but if you are only planning on staying in the house for 5 years, you may want to think about buying stuff that you can take with you. I have a Big Green Egg and it is AWESOME. You can't do a whole pig in it but it is a great smoker / grill / wood burning oven. It really is hard to make food taste bad on it and it is extremely efficient on fuel. I recently cooked 38 lbs of Boston Butts on one load of hardwood charcoal for 18 hours. I've had family members make large smoker pits and my dad has a large double smoker trailer setup. The only problem when they get that big (big enough to do a whole pig) is that they only get used for really big cookouts since they take massive amounts of fuel. But if I could have a large smoker pit and my Egg and my Weber gas grill, well that would just be heaven.
Outdoor kitchens are all the rage, if anything its adding to the value of the house. I'm not worried about taking anything with me.
