Well I've been down for a couple of weeks with a 2 1/2 speed gearbox till tonight.

Jason and I drove down to Valdosta Monday night to pickup a newer trans for the bugeye.
Tuesday night we did the swap and wrapped up with a test drive around midnight.
The purpose of this thread is not to brag about getting a built gearbox for a damn good deal but to thank those that helped make it happen.

Thanks to Matt and Jeremy Ball for lending me the bore scope to verify that what I was paying for was in working order and it looked brand new by the way.

To Jason Rochester for the drive down, and for staying to the very end of the swap, (we're even when I get your front end welded back on by the way)

To Sean and Rick for coming down and helping out, I'll gladly repay the favor whenever you make the call.

    As for the trans, well...
Kaaz 1st through 3rd straight cut gears and helical 4th and 5th
She screams like raped raped ape and makes having a radio pointless.

Once again thank you for those that helped, as you have proved again what makes this forum great.
And if you want to see the car in action I'll be at Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday night as will Ghost

    congrats on the gearbox.

Next time your up this way I want a ride. I am curious just how loud straight cuts really are.

Mike I have heard one that was insanely loud that I heard the car 2 blocks away. Then I rode in another with 1/2 straight cut and 3/4 helical and I couldn't hear them at all. Both were built by AndrewTech and of course both were PPG's.

Makes me wonder if the 1/2 straight, 3/4 helical car really has 1/2 straights.

I thought the gears were ppg anyways still strong as chit. Can't wait for a ride and hear that whine. Sorry I couldn't stay longer but damn nice bikes there too.

I'll finish the scooters after the bastard child is done. The black CB400SS you saw is pretty close to being done just a few minor details to work out. So if there is anyone here interested in some old scool cafe bikes or choppers let me know, would like to part ways with the CB400SS and maybe one of the choppers hiding in the corners.

i wouldnt want the CB400SS as my first bike, but if i can get rid of the L and get a little 250 starter bike or something i may stil be interested in it in a few months

Stock shifters suck as_! the o-rings that hold the shift ball in place is the most worthless design seen yet on a Subaru. If anyone has a recommendation for a replacement shifter please chime in. May just have to fab my on design if a suitable replacement can't be found.

Nice, congrat's! Did you do different shift forks (heard they are junk too), or LSD?

LSD was installed with the gearset and that's all 5 not just 1-3. first three are straight cut.

    gear ratio's are as follows, 3.167 / 2.267 / 1.667 / 1.250 / 0.964

No problem helping out Brian. It went pretty smooth considering those other 2 punks left like an hour into the install.

Did you fix that shifter problem yet?

I'd have to say no and it will be a while before he can put something together that can handle his shifting style

Thanks for letting me take it for a spin. Those straight cuts are nowhere near as load as I thought it would be.

Man, I'd like a ride too! If your location is correct your pretty close to me, I'd like to meet up sometime and check it out.

    OT: Jason, whats up man?

Your just jealous that I don't need the clutch pedal after first gear
and sat at the shop with the machinist and found two problems.
First the engine and trans mounts are to soft allowing to much travel
The O.E. design is just junk

The solution is two part, a completely new design, and gated,
the second part is learn the shift points in regard to rpm

Based on your new findings, do you think that an 02 5sp is a bad choice to upgrade, or any Subaru 5sp? Would a 6sp be less dramatic on a 02 and better upgrade based on the other inherent weaknesses in the Subaru 5sp design above and beyond the weak gears? I am looking at the MFactory gears vs. 6sp quite seriously and have a 1st half production year 2002 WRX 5sp.

It is not the tranny that is giving him issues. Its the cup that holds the ball at the bottom of the shift lever. The snap ring and plastic it secures is crap.

When I read this I thought there may be more problems than just the "O" rings......

I am too old for "coolness factors" LOL I am looking for reliability, functionality, performance and something that will support about 400hp max. I would prefer the 5sp since I like the ratio's but I don't want to have to keep taking out the trans to fix small stuff like "O" rings and shift linkages etc. The six speed seems very bullet proof but it many cases I would be swapping out the complete drive line and it seems about 2-4 grand more. I am sticking with my ej205 for as long as she holds up since I am not tracking the car and drive like my grand mother on Prozac due ticket stuff. Once the 205 is done I would prefer to get a ej207 since I like running smaller turbo high revving set ups.

The shifter issue is more of soft mounts and not using a clutch and both are easy fixes for me.

sure and besides the interstate how often do shift into 6th?
plus the ratios in a USDM 6-spd are useless for anything but the highway
anything purpose built FTW is more like it:naughty:

Everyone has their own use. How often I get in 6th? EVERYDAY. Country living FTW ;)

But if I lived in HoeLanta I'd rather have a 5 speed and have to agree with you.

Speaking of 5spd's does anyone know if a 94 JDM Sti ej20T 5sp would bolt in to a 02 BugI (I hope this is not a thread jack but I believe it si on topic:))

  37. nicad

nicad Yes I am a troll

    yes. it's all interchangeable.

depends on the differential ratios, but it will all mechanically work fine

The .093 5th is not the best for highway use but it runs through the gears so nice and I'm sure if I ran the occassional track day it would be sweet to have as well. Playing in the twisty's at a respectable speed is where this 5-spd will shine. I haven't really pushed it on the strip before and tonight will be the first time with this transmission.

google STI transmission part numbers, there is a site that has all the specs listed, R&P, ratio, center diff, LSD or open

Just drove Highway 60 between Blue Ridge and Dahlonega for the fist time last week, that is friggin' amazing. Might have to go there this weekend to try to overcome my "readiness fail" for emissions. I bet that would be a blast with your 5sp!

Yeah 60(from blue ridge) is the way I usually get over to Suches if I don't have to caravan with anyone.

You shifting clutchless these days? When you are really good you can downshift without the clutch ;) That part took me forever when I was learning to drive 18 wheelers.

Finding the right rpm's for the shift points is taking a little time. the worn out mounts aren't helping matters either. Got taken out in the second round at the strip last night. Little red honda ran my ass down in the last 100 foot. Ben got taken out in the first round to a little "hottie" running a Legends with a 1200cc Yamaha FJ motor. Had no real boost till 2nd gear.

Yeah till we get the launch control up and running and the hallman manual boost controller it's not going to be a great 1/8th car. Should be a monster in the 1/4 though. I guess Ben did some calcs and found that in order to reach the power to weigh ratio of one of those things with a full weight Sti would take around 500 hp.

That and a wastegate that dumps past idle which right now is a good thing
