Really can't say whether I like or dislike this film. It had a lot of good aspects and a lot of bad. I have not read the comic, but have read from other reviewers that it stays pretty true to it except a minor tweak at the end. This is NOT a movie for kids, period. There is a lot of extreme violence and sexual overtones... then add the almost 3 hour run time and I don't think kids would appreciate. This is not Batman, Ironman or the Hulk. One of my major gripes with this film, is the numorous, lingering shots of blue dong. One of the main characters (Dr. Manhatten), is naked virtually the entire film. I don't consider myself to be a prude or any more homophobic than the next guy, but... I thought this was unnessessary and took away from the film.
That being said, the story is very interesting. The special effects are awesome (looks great on BR), and the acting is good (especially the Rorshack character). Not gonna go over the whole plot, but basically it takes place in an alternate 1985(Back to the Future II tribute?), where we are on the brink of nuclear war with Russia. There are superheros that started up in the 40's, who have since been banned from doing anything by a 4th term Richard Nixon. Someone is killing off the retired superheros..
Anyways, interesting film... I just really feel it could have been at least 30 minutes shorter and not lost anything.. Hell, the directors cut I watched on BR was 3 hours and 6 minutes!!!!!! Make it shorter, put a banana hammock on the blue guy and it would have been a lot better...

I thought this movie sucked. I have tried to watch it now 3 times and I have yet to make it through the entire movie. Also, I never noticed Dr. Manhatten's junk in the movie.

You must not be getting very far into the movie then... its a virtual dong-fest... But, yes.. hard to make it thru. The guy I borrowed it from said the movie was long. I figured 2.. 2 1/2 hours... Not friggin 3+ hours. Me and my girl both said "Its gotta be over soon" at least 3 times.

She's hot, but what is it? Like a 2 minute scene? To me, every second of penis should be countered with 5 seconds of boobs...

I thought it was a good flick.

  8. I thought that it was a realistic take on what a world with superheroes would be like. They have real problems.O.k. not too found of the full monty with captain no-underpants.The directors cut added some stuff, some good- some bad. This is definitely not your typical superhero movie.I think that overall the director was trying to stay faithful to the comic, excuse me the graphic novel version.( I did not read it either just heard about it ).

I loved this movie when I saw it in theatres though it was a bit long. I guess being a film student dessensitized me to seeing the shlong because I don't think they showed overly too much of it, or I just learned to focus on other things in the scene. Overall I think I gave it like an 8 of 10, a little more editing and of the time legnth and it could have been better.

X2 on balancing off penis with some boobage.

I still really want to see this. I have a feeling it's going to be a little while though.

Another gripe... The sound on this movie is terrible!! First of all, no 7.1... c'mon.. this is almost 2010 and your big bad Bluray with a billion features can't include 7.1 surround? Hell, that last Matthew Mconahay pirate treasure movie had it. The voices on this film where very quiet and the action was set to 11. quiet, quiet, quiet.... LOUD NOISES!!!!!!!! I spent way too much time on volume modulation, which detracted from the overall experience....

^I was under the impression that the vast majority of Blurays are still just 5.1. Maybe Fool's Gold is the exception.

I must say that I do hate it when movies do this with the sound (quiet dialog, loud explosions), but I experience it so much these days.

Here's a copy of what I wrote on IA in their Watchmen thread after the movie first came out. I still need to watch the movie again, once I get internet at my new house I'll be DLing this for sure.

Any of you guys look into the ideological symbolism of each of the superheros? The whole story was written as an allegory to the cold war. I havent read the novels and dont know much about the author's political stance but here's what i got out of it.

Comedian- fascism, willing to kill anybody to reach his end result
Oxymandias- communism, willing to kill a few to save everyone and create a peaceful society
Dr. Manhattan- the atomic bomb/ military superiority. US has it, Russia wants it. Using it ends conflicts but at a huge ethical deficit.
Rorschach- Democracy/justice. Willing to do what is right/necessary for justice without regards to others opinions or actions, even if he must act alone.
Night owl- ideological innocent people of the world. didnt want to shoulder responsibility until absolutely necessary. Thinks everything will work out and when it doesnt he must step up. I almost see him as being Europe pre WWII, complacent until pushed to fight back.
Watchmen- NATO. Hands down, An attack on one is an attack on all.
Silk Spectre- I still cant make my mind up on her, she's obviously passion but for what aim? Maybe compassion towards your fellow man?

I really need to watch the movie again so I can voice these ideas a little more coherently. I thought it was a great change of pace from Iron Man, X-Men, etc, and those of you that didnt enjoy it just dont like a thinking man's superhero movie.
