it was AWD, and he put two off coming around the corner and lost control. Holy shit...I bet the owner of that Infiniti and NSX were not happy campers...I would have to do everything but kill the driver if that were my car.

How does that work in regards to insurance purposes?

Ok. It's AWD. Everything I drive them it feels like FWD compared to Subys.

Yes, I wonder how insurance will work.

my guess would be if it's an HPDE class they pay for it...I'm pretty sure that's how SCCA works

Dont forget that there is track insurance :)

Edit -- I agree with one of the YT comments, sort of seems like a poor place to stage the vehicles.

Looks to me like the camera car is a Mustang... it says ROUCH in the window with the mustang horse, and the dash looks mustangy..

It's like a magic trick. Watch as I transform this G37 into a wrecked Evo... TA DAaaa!

    And by the way...
Thank you Captain Obvious... Are you drinking or something? Haha... I'm just bustin' your balls.

The way they were standing around the cars I thought this was going to end way different.

When I'm any where near a track /auto-x course I never stand with my back to oncoming traffic.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. There was a g35 there now it's been replaced with a smashed evo!!

track should pay for staging in a runoff. That dude is lucky, NEVER turn your back.

Evos are FWD biased until power is put down.

I know it was obvious, but if you read the captions on youtube it says G35 and NSX all over the place.. :)

No SCCA does not insure anybody's car..... if you go to a PDX or HPDE any damage done to your car is your responsibility. Also most standard car insurance does not cover damage done to a car at track regardless if it was a "timed" event or not.

Any people ask me why I don't do track days that much anymore.... my suggestion is to save up for really good safety equipment like roll cages and such or buy a used race car with a log book from NASA or SCCA.

Whomever was putting on that event should be held responsible... there is no reason cars should be staging so close to the track.

I meant for the G35 and NSX...I know the evo is screwed

No SCCA will not cover that.... that's why everyone signs a liability waiver when they go to the track or an autox....

then what are the options for the victims? small claims court?

This event appears to have been a PDA (http://www.pdadrivingschool.com/) event sanction by NASA... if any of the NASA safety procedures were not followed I guess the car owners can go after NASA. But I'm not a lawyer so I'm not sure. I do know if either Solo, Club Racing or PDX SCCA programs skimp on following some of the safety prodecures outline in the various rules we can lose our sanction from SCCA.

Really nothing. They sign a waiver. They staged in an area that they should have known better to stage in.

Mistake by the EVO driver but it's a track day. As soon as you step on the track you're taking that risk that someone else could fuck you up. I don't really blame the driver too much because everyone makes mistakes when pushing it, it was a bad place to wait in grid for certain.

Unfortunate but that's what can happen.

  28. 07Ltd#767

    07Ltd#767 The Neighborhood Drunk

no, something would happen...you can't tell me if you were the driver of that NSX you would say 'shucks, that's just too bad about my car, oh well'

I don't know what sanctions could be taken, but seeing as how the mustang caught it on tape, I'm willing to bet some action was taken, be it against the host organization or the driver of the evo

    Mere, what about autox events?

if that went to court the first question would be, " if you thought it was too close to the track then why did you still stage." and thats true, would you stage in a run off?

Liability waivers only do so much. Anyone can sue for any reason. Whether they win or not is another story, but he they have enough big wig lawyers then somebodies going to be in big doo doo.
Remind me never to organize a track event again.

What boggles my mind is that many tracks have ONE wall, the wall between the front straight and the pits. That wall is only there to prevent trackers from hitting people who are staged... how in the world do you decide to stage people with no wall between running cars and standing people???

Seriously, consider TGP, CMP, Roebling Road, etc - they each have ONE wall...

It was vaporized between the evo and the g35. tada.
I'm just absolutely amazed that the guy jumped out of the way just in time!

it's in front of the G35...you can't see it from the in-car camera, but at the end when it's flashing through the still shots you see what's left of the ass end of it.

I amazed so many people were so close to track, yet walking around like nothing was going on (the guy in G35). Add that to the list of organizations to blame for the lawsuit...There are definitely some lucky innocents there.

If the victims can prove that the event organizers were negligible and reckless in how they operated the event or staged cars then the waiver doesn't mean dick.

  42. 4sevens

    4sevens Member

That that is what the big shot lawyers will try to prove, regardless of how careful and compliant the event was operated. Anyone who has assets and is connected to the event will be a target.

the evo driver and his buddy driving an audi (behind him) were banned from other regional events following the incident. it was found that they were driving way over their heads, ignoring their instructors, and trying to race each other instead of concentrating on learning their cars and the track.

i don't know the fate of the organizers or of any subsequent lawsuits. its pretty clear the staging was a really dumb idea with the cars that far out from the only protection - the wall. and for the drivers to just be walking around in the open next to a hot track is crazy.

more info here including other video footage:
    http://www.roadraceautox.com/showthread.php?t=24674

in the other video clip in that thread you can see the audi driver struggling to "keep up" and almost going off as well.

My thoughts exactly, I pretty sure they signed some waiver that protects the SCCA. As odd as the whole accident was with the cars being stage way to close to the track accidents happen in all kind of racing. But holy crap that was scary!

I always thought that the Evos understeer less than Subarus. I feel really bad for the NSX that got killed, all aluminum, those cars fold up when hit. With that staging, and people just standing around not looking at on-coming cars, it's lucky for them nobody got hit.

I thought for sure that guy in the G35 was going to get hit. What kind of idiot stands that close to the track with his back to it the whole time???
