Okay, I'm starting this thread to put out all the problems I'm encountering in hopes some of you guys might know an answer. Thanks in advance for all of the help. 1 - I can't get the cranked pulley off. I know it's spec'd to 133 ft/lbs, but when I put an impact gun on it it doesn't have enough torque, and when I put a breaker bar on it it turns the motor (which is seized, btw...so it's a lot of force). The flywheel is not on. 2 - I'm using different head castings (off an '05, I believe) and the oil feed lines are not the same. In the top picture, it's my stock heads off my '07. Look at the top left and bottom right, that's where the feed line bolts in. In the second / third picture, you see the new head. The feed line on the top right is there, along with the bracket location, but there's nowhere to put the bottom right bolt. I'm completely stumped...someone please fill in.
there's two pinhole size openings in the housing at 3 and 9, i slid a flat head screw driver through and into the teeth on the fly, then took a 22mm socket on a 3' breaker bar, then had to add a 3' extension and put all of my weight on it for it to break it loose. that crank pulley is a lot heavier than i was expecting... next issue i've found, I don't have the cam tools, looks like a 10mm allen head, but not sure
the cam bolts are going to be a bitch. buy the best allen socket you can, 1/2" drive. you will just snap those bitches off if you dont, or round the bolt and have to drill it out
yeah, the castings are different for 04/05 than the 07 (and maybe 06, not sure). I had to go buy a new oil feed line from SoG ($60...wtf) that reroutes it to the back side of the head. Funny, it's only on the right head, the left is identical.
also, you guys weren't kidding w/ the cam gears. We got three of the four off. In our failed attempt of the right hand exhaust gear, we broke a dremel, chisel, 1/2->3/8 reducer, countless drill bits and the cam gear itself. We finally got fed up w/ it and beat it off with a hammer (after buying a new one - thanks King) just to get the backplate off.
lol, good times. i almost have my old motor out of the car (doing it completely by myself) its all unbolted and just sitting in there. just need to get my uncles hoist and i'll be done. gonna pressure wash the shit out of the engine bay when i have it out. CAKED IN OIL!!
Tell me about it. Started my engine tear down (pics in my journal). In 3 hours I have the engine completely ready to pull minus the engine mounts, tranny to block bolts and the pitch mount. But my engine bay is FILTHY! It's gonna take 20 gallons of Simple green to clean that thing....lol
careful with those engine mounts, one of mine was seized and we had to dremel off the bolt and punch it through the frame...this was after i had to remove the subframe bracing and front sway bar (which has to be my least favorite of all things to work on). Gave me a good excuse to upgrade to cusco motor mounts
I have GroupN's on the way now. Mine have been off before. Trick.......heat that sucker up with oxygen torch first if it gives trouble
drew... you're not very delicate when it comes to disassembly I warned you about the cam gear bolts. 3/8" drive on those? don't even bother
Lol when we removed my cam gear we had to go to the parts store like 5 times cuz we kept breaking the 10mm allen bit and even a couple of wrenches.
actually it wasn't me...it was ped standing on the motor, shaun and breel holding the motor from twising, jason rochester holding the cam gear, and me on the end of a 5' break bar for the muscle. The only one we didn't get off was the one we didn't impact for 5 minutes prior. After we stripped the first one, we just used an impact gun on forward and reverse for a few minutes before trying to get off to loosen it up. And i resent that...i'm as delicate as a bull in a china shop...
i need a engine wiring harness diagram...somehow I have a few pins that don't seem to have a home - anyone know where I can get one? Need ASAP. Btw, everything's in...turbo kit, radiator, belts, everything...everything except the FMIC piping and a few miscellaneous pins. The pins are a must - much appreciation to whoever has a diagram.
^^^ There were only two...one was the motor mount and it was my fault, I didn't feel like taking the fsb off. The other was the exhaust cam gear right next to the manifold...pretty common problem from what i've heard
STi's must be way different. I didn't have to touch my FSB or the axles when I pulled my engine 2 days ago. It was tight fit but I was able to get the socket on the bolts for the engine mounts and one whack with a rubber mallet broke them loose.
couldn't get the socket on flush, which is why it rounded off...i'm also running a 27mm fsb. Didn't have to touch the axles, just remove the subframe assembly and unbolt the fsb brackets, then push it out of the way - didn't touch the endlinks
