I was confused by what looked like water dripping from my rear right fender well all day yesterday. I thought it might be fuel since it was under the filler tube. After further inspection it was H2O. I opened the trunk to find the floor liner was damp(I have no water containers in the trunk). I pulled up the liner opened the spare tire cover to find about 5 gallons of standing water covering my spare. There was also water in the inside of the right rear inner fender tub. I am careful about maintaining my weather stripping around the trunk and car has never been wrecked or rear ended. The body integrity should be pretty sound. I inspected the trunck lid and lip and there are no abnormalities. I have an 02 Bugeye with about 82k. Is this a characteristic of this model, or some kind of wear & tear issue that occurs over time, or possibly just an anomaly that occurred due to the intense rain we've been having. My car is not garage kept.

It might be a model year thing - I have an '03 and I have always noticed the amount of gunk that builds up around the weather stripping around the trunk. I never thought about it until I had a blanket in the trunk get moldy because it kept getting wet in the dark trunk. Since then I have been pretty good about popping the trunk every time I wash the car to make sure the weather stripping and area around it is clean and have not noticed anything more than a little dampness since.

do you have a spoiler on your car?

the black goo of death that was supposed to insulate my trunk from the spoiler went 'bad' and leaked years ago and had the same issue as you. If you have a spoiler, that's more than likely the issue, especially with all this rain we've had lately.

I have had leaking from both the spoiler and the tail lights.

I'll take a few steps back.....the one perk with these cars is blue book is decent, I believe It's worth more destroyed than alive!

Just a foot note Breel made me aware that the two strips on the roof that
provide drainage are probably clogged so the headliner is coming off and they be will cleaned and resealed, so there is a fix for anyone else that might be experiencing this.
