Even if voting stopped yesterday, Obama has done more to harm the causes of peace than he has to help them.

However, the Nobel Peace Prize has been an irrelevant Political Award for years. Pretty much the moment the award was given to Yassir Arafat, the legitimacy and honor of that award was destroyed.

At least the Nobel prizes for science and literature are still valid measures of achievement, and really mean something.

Worthless my ass. I'll gladly accept the "useless" peace prize and a cool $1,000,000 any day.

It's worthless in the respect that it has been going to lots of people that have said much but done nothing.

The winner used to be a person who had actually done something about peace but here lately it seems to be the ass kiss award.

man o man.. obama sure can talk

"I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations. "

Sigh this is so STUPID. I'd pay a lot to be able to swiftly put my boot in his rear.

George Bush implemented "No child left behind". Obama implemented "No child left a dime".

I agree that it's stupid, but wouldn't make a lot more sense to put a swift boot up the committees ass? I think it's funny how much backlash Obama is getting for this. He didn't appoint the award to himself.

With his approval rating falling so fast, even they may jump ship soon.

I love a government that preaches to its people financial responsibility then goes off and borrows billions to pay for stuff that the people don't want the government to pay for. "Change." If this is change, then I wanted things to stay the same.

If Obama was the great leader some people make him out to be, he would have graciously declined the award, asking the committee to consider him at a later date.

yawn. you guys really like to fly off the handle. He was nominated for the award by anonymous peers around the world. He is donating the money to charity, and if you actually read his remarks about it he acknowledges the fact he didn't really do anything for it.

He basically got the award for not being bush. Bash on the man all you want, but at least bash on something he has control over (like going back on campaign promises, etc). For all you armchair nationalists on here, take solace in the fact an American won it (IB fucking retards bring up birth certificates, ad naseum)

...but anyway the peace prize is kind of a joke nowadays. wilson and roosevelt won it for the awesome things they did. nowadays who really cares

Wow nicad, that made sense, what makes it better is that you mention two of the first liberal socialist presidents elected by this country to have won this award as well. Well I guess this will be the first million given to ACORN that wasn't taxpayer money. I'm curious as to why Reagan didn't win a peace prize for bankrupting the Soviet Union and ending the cold war.

what does "liberal socialism" have to do with winning the nobel peace prize? except for having a myopic view that the rest of the world subscribes to our partisan politics. their idea of being a liberal vastly differs from our moderate-right political structure

roosevelt and wilson did a fair deal as it relates to negotiation treaties on an international scale. roosevelt was involved in negotiating peace between russia and japan, and wilson had, you know, a really minor part in world war I

as far your reagan question, why don't you write them and ask. or are you trying to be disingenuous and draw the conclusion that only LIBERAL SOCIALISTS win this award.

I'd also like to point out there were a lot of things that contributed to the fall of the USSR. Reagan's gigantic deficit defense spending played a very small part, with many people agreeing it had no effect

I think the war in Afghanistan pushed them over the edge. Seem familiar?

Let the f'ing Taliban have that worthless piece of land. We don't need troops there just Predators to remind them that we can reach out and touch some one anytime we want.

Damn Justin, I throw a hook with no bait and you set it for me with no work on my part. Thanks, just playing the part of devils advocate I guess. If you go back and look at Wilson's original proposals you would realize that it was a failure. His stroke pretty much side lined him from the final outcome of the Versailles Treaty, and the Balfour Agreement pretty much gave us that little hotbed called the middle east.
I won't even mention the lame duck League of Nations. I'll give props for good intentions though and 14 other points

Yet another example of losing interest in a cause only to come around and bite us in the ass. It's a shame that we couldn't put differences aside and have a Marshall plan for Iraq and Andnotagainstan. Oh wait we did for Iraq, and some California legislators threw in some environmental crap into the mix so the Iraqis said screw you will sell our oil to China. Thank you hippies

Mabe so. But once again, Obama isn't making himself out to be the great leader, other people are (you said it yourself), so why does he need to decline the reward? Obviously it's the other people that need to decline it.

Edit: I'm not going to delete this because in some twisted way it still has some validity. Just note that I was drunk when I wrote it. :)

I am just blown away that this is being discussed on a car forum. Probably the first time in history that the nobel prize has generated discussion on a Subaru forum! If nothing else, Obama, by his presence more than his intent, has caused a greater interest in the nations politics, international relations and domestic policies. Whether you like him or not, you can't argue that our interest is a bad thing...

sorry, but if you think the Balfour Agreement turned the Middle East into the "hotbed" it is today, you are DEAD WRONG. you'd have to go back another good 2000-3000 years to see why the middle east is such a clusterfuck. EVERY WAR no matter how fundamentally political it seems is really stemmed from Religious differences and/or the desire to assimilate (make everyone the same as you), one of those 2 reasons period. if you start from the FIRST recorded battles in history and work your way to the present day, a 3 year old could make that argument for just about every war.

The Obama fandom is strong around the world. Its largely the same as athletic jock worship, i feel.

Its largely irrelevant. I'm just waiting for Obama to make the exact mistake that Clinton did with the USS Cole bombing...
