My '04 wrx is starting to grind when shifting into 4th. To curtail the question, this is during normal driving, I am not slamming gears or driving aggressively. It became what I would consider frequent this morning on my way to work. Is this a common problem or should I start saving money for a tranny upgrade? Your help is always appreciated.
the answer to both of your questions: YES although usually its 2nd, but i've seen 3rd and heard of 4th as well. doesn't necessarily mean its gone. but there is a better chance than not that it is on its way out

Thanks for the advice. I was wondering if some new gear oil could help. This is a common problem on my SR20 tranny in second, but it is usually fixed with a little gear oil. After all that I've heard on the subaru trannies I was afraid it might actually be going. I'll try the gear oil concoction first and keep my fingers crossed.
the cocktail is a hit or miss thing. Some love it, some LOATHE it with all they are. I've had grinding in gears before and exchanged the fluid for SUBARU Extra-S and it's always fixed it up. +1 for fresh fluids. Might as well swap the rear diff fluid while you're under there!
First do you know what fluid is in there? If not get with ALex, king, whoever and try Xtra S. Fuck the coctail. The 5spd in the L was grinding every gear even if I shifted at 2K after 3 days of the S I could redline all gears.
I have used both and thought the cocktail worked out well. But there is never anything wrong with going with OEM fluids. If that does not fix it you might have a gear face chipped or a syncro going out. As always we are more than happy to give you a hand. Andy has done more of these transmission builds than I can count and never had a problem with any of them. We also have several options for upgrades
So what is so magical about Extra-S? I wonder if the tranny and rear diff on my Outback has ever been flushed?
Thanks to all for the help. I'll be swapping in some freshness on Monday (if I can acquire some S from Alex). Hopefully this works, a new xmsn would really kill my turbo upgrade funds:bigthumb:
