Asking for a friend that needs her car to last to the end of the semester:
It's on 02ish ford taurus V6 that has a loud clanking noise coming from the top center of the motor. Sounds like valvetrain issues. It lost almost all of its oil at one point. Any ideas on how to keep in running longer. I know keep the oil topped off. Does a thicker viscosity help at all? Anyone have any other ideas

I know in the old days, you could put Marvel Mystery Oil in a car and it would quiet it down quite a bit?

you can just try to change the oil super often. when i bought the L it was smoking like freaking crazy. all kinds of leaky cam seals and everything. i just changed the oil with the cheap shit less than 3000 miles every time and always added some smoke-stop or lucas stabilizer the smoking was completely gone after 2 oil changes and the motor lasted me a year or ~20,000 miles. thats a year longer than it should have been running. it was dead when i bought it, and just regular maintenence and psycho about oil changes kept it alive.

the problem here is, is she gonna be able to keep up on the maintenence and check the oil AT LEAST once a week if not every day???

buy engine honey :) lol it may be so thick that it takes 5 minutes to pour a 12 ounce bottle in,but it sure stops sounds, smoking, and slows down oil consumption lol

ironically, I had a similar issue with a Ford Escort and the clicking noise on top. Gave it to a 'friend' to repair and never heard from him or saw the car again.

well fords are notorious for valvetrain noise period. i.e. listed to ANY V6 mustang, every single one of them whines, creaks, moans and ticks. they all sound like ticking time bombs

and unless its a 4cylinder in that taurus, chances are its the exact same V6 motor thats in the mustangs

Just put some cheap oil in it and it's running much much quieter now. She had let it get really low since it had a big consumption problem. If it eats through its normal viscosity oil again quickly I'm going to through something really thick in it. Thanks
