Alright, kids. I'm looking at an intake for the swap. I'm of the mind that, for the most part, an intake is an intake, and the filter is what makes the difference. As long as it delivers air to the engine, who cares? I have enough spare bits of piping and crap in my garage that I could make an intake and stick a filter on it. I'm dead-set on the Apexi Power Intake filter - I found a site a while back that did independent tests on K&N, HKS, AEM, Apexi, Purolator, and some other company. The Apexi one filtered as well as OEM and flowed as well as the K&N. I've heard a few reports to the same effect word-of-mouth. What are you guys' thoughts on this? Should I spring for a full Apexi intake, or just make my own and put a filter on it? Recommending other filters is fine, but I won't buy an AEM product, ever, and I've had nothing but trouble with K&N filters. Thanks! :wiggle:
I had a K&N for a long time. Even when it was cleaned and freshly oiled (not over-oiled, mind you) I didn't feel like it filtered well. The car idled funny. I switched out to a Purolator, just for kicks, for one change. The rough idle was gone, and the butt dyno felt a bit of improvement. No other mods - though I do clean my MAF and reset the ECU every time I change the air filter.
Buy a MAF flange and build the intake yourself. It really isn't that hard if you know someone that can weld aluminum. I think ball has a few hundred maf flanges he can sell
this just make sure to include a few inches of straight pipe on either side of the MAF and youre good
lol, if you just got an AEM you wouldn't even need an intake, seeing as how it doesn't run off MAF. OT, but what's your beef w/ AEM? just make sure your MAF is far enough away from the turbo and any bends to make sure there's no turbulent flow and you'll be fine
Come on Drew, AEM is more than a standalone ECU. They do make other products...like CAI's or rather HAI's as is with most of the offerings on the market
Im assuming you ruled out the stock wrx airbox becaise it wont fit in your chassis efficiently? Or is there some other reason
I think you should go with the stock intake and be done. Sparta, the stock wrx box has no problem fitting in the early imprezas'.
thanks, now Xan, why don't you want to run the stock wrx airbox with k&n drop in filter. What mods are you planning on having done in your swap? stock td04 turbo and tmic? unless you are going rotated or some crazy setup, you don't need to make an intake. I think a stage 2 tune will keep you happy for awhile considering its your first boosted car.
Maybe he just wants to hear the sucking sound that a CAI/SRI makes? IMO get a use a stock airbox and spend the money on a nice turbo inlet. I loved my APS CAI, sounded great and performed well but I've been on a stick intake since the motor swap and its worked well.
