i have an 05 sti and i'm needing a new head unit and i'm not wanting to go back with the stock 05 sti one..i was thinking of putting in an 06 and up head unit with mp3 player capability into my car..what would i have to do to make it work? or would it be plug n play?? anyone who may know please chime in..or anyone with a factory mp3 head unit :)

I am pretty sure it is just Plug and Play, however, i have never seen the back of the 06 Headunit to know for sure. The 02 Headunit is Plug and Play up to 05 Model Year at least. I can't see them changing the plugs for 06.

If the dash is the same, it will just plug and play. I dont think they have changed the plugs in a long long time.

'06 head unit is mp3 capable with a kit and some soldering, but '07 has it out of the box, assuming you get the jack with it.
If you're handy, and want to work for your tunes, I've got an '06 6-disc changer I can sell you.

Wait, blaster are you referring to the AUX jack or the ability to read a MP3 off a disk?

Oh, that kind of mp3 capability. No, '06 can't read them off of a disk. You can mess with it to add an aux, but that's it.

    Yup, '07+ from my understanding.

Save yourself some heartache looking for an 07+ and go aftermarket. You will get better quality for sure. You can do the forester din pocket with a door to take up the space. Also that way you can get ipod control on the headunit.

I can vouch that the '06 definitely cannot read mp3s on disk.

world hifi says the data ribbon cable is probably the problem, and there is a recall on this unit for the data ribbon cable to be replaced..the screen doesnt illuminate anymore and doesnt come out right

I can vouch that the 07 will read mp3's off disc and is PNP as well. The unit is made by Clarion. The aux input can also be used to read mp3's off portable music devices too.

Yes, just analog music data. BTW Bjtyson3, if you want factory mp3 capability, fit and finish and PNP install then this is it. I'm selling mine.

On Imprezas, 2007 is the earliest year for both MP3 CD capability and Aux input.

This site is handy to check features for each model/year: www.cars101.com

The 14-pin power/speaker connector was used on all OEM HUs from around 1995 up to 2007, and on 2008-up OEM Navi HUs -- so any of those years will be plug-and-play.

If you do get one of the OEM HUs with Aux input, I have the 8-pin harness that will plug into that socket on the HU. E-mail me for details.
