How low is LOW?

Need some advice/opinion on how low is too low. I'm on BC coilovers and have it pretty low now. The handling and ride "quality" is good.

Will dropping it more give me better handling but lower the "quality" of the ride?

    you will lose both

Lowering the car further without any other suspension changes, will make the handling of the car worse. You will want to get a set of ball joint extenders in order to get the lower set-up to handle properly.

It's a Subaru, not a Honda. Keep it around where it sits or higher.

i think the rule of thumb is, if the axles are perfectly parallel to the ground then that is as low as you should go. someone correct me if im wrong, just remember hearing this for DD subarus. NOT track/mountain/performance setups.

and then once you get them lowered to that level, obviously you need to get all the supporting suspension mods and alignments, etc

mine sits way higher with springs and struts, your current height looks great

    This is absolutely correct.

If you lower it, two really bad things happen that negatively affect your handling:
    1. The control arm is put in the bad part of the camber curve - the part where it goes more positive as it compresses - not good for cornering at all.
    2. You get closer to the bottom of your shock travel and bumpstops. Hitting your bumpstops or bottoming out the shocks causes a SUDDEN lack of grip - which is horrible in the middle of a turn.

You actually won't lose any travel at the lowest setting. These are made so you maintain maximum (albeit very little) travel no matter how high/low they are set.

Lowering more kills the handling. How low is low? When you are so low you can't get over a speed bump driving straight into it....you are too low IMO. In all honesty my RCE Blacks are pushing it for me and those are high by many people's standards.

wrong this is low, and i've seen lower than this.

then again this is stupid and as far as im concerned, all bagged (show)cars are stupid

Well, low and drivable. Air-bags don't count either. I've talked to Sleepy a few times and his car is like that everyday and drives and handles fine.

Here is another that I consider DD-LOW:

thats about how low mine was except the front since I rubbed the inner fender wells on mountain runs being so low.

  21. Bug-Rex

So that's why my front end was so high. I am still trying to perfect the ride height. Lol.

lol yea, and you gotta remember the wagon's and sedans sit differently. What is high on the sedan wasn't that high on my wagon. Probably why the rear is way too low now too lol...sowwy :wavey:

    Lower is faster. Lower=lower CG.

Keep the spring preload correct, drop the ride height via the lower mounts and align/tire-wheel clearance appropriately.

Then you can hand everyone else their ass on a gold platter after they tell you that your car is too low.

<---who's vehicles are all slammed out and outruns everyone in twisties.

Correct pre-load is good! If you're pre load is incorrect and you are lifting wheels on un-equal planes (usually rear wheels), when that wheel hits, the force of it free spinning and hitting, will cause your center diff clutches to go bye bye. Happened to me, on my 5sp that is.

A lot of those pics posted already are from the Hellaflush tread on Nasioc which is the only thread i go to. I agree with going really low kill the way your car handles but damn it looks good when done correctly.

Axles and control arms should be parallel to the ground. End of debate.

If you want a certain look get bigger and wider wheels.

This looks good (at first glance) because it's a car that came with 16's and probably has 18's now. I like the Walmart shotgun earmuffs hanging on the rollcage like he has a 2-way radio to his pit crew. hahaha... ruins the illusion that the guy who owns this isn't a rich wannabe douchebag.

It is a bugeye. He had a whoopsie during a rally event and messed up the front. Then converted it to the new blob eye.

Really? The stock geometry sucks when you lower your car hella low without putting a roll center adjustment kit on it.

The lower you go (while maintaining correct suspension geometry) the better the handling. [Very big blanket statement]
