    Helical Gears

    Straight Cut

    For the scientific proof:
    http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/People/rapi...isms/chpt7.html

In short, helical gears operate quieter than straight cut. Straight cut will 'whine' the faster they go but offer both A. More directional application of force allowing for less power loss. and B. Higher acceptable loads until failure. Basically making the transmission stronger and more efficient. However though, like noted before, car manufacturers don't use straight cut due to the imense noise the transmission will produce.

Truth! However I heard straight cut ppg's from 2 blocks away (I'm severely deaf mind you....really) yet I've heard two different 1-2 straight cut and 3-4 helicals and they barely whined much at all. It was whining but nothing like the few loud ones.....wonder if those were really dog boxes?

They hold power!! Thats why they are better :)

They are only worse if your worried about a little rally noise :)

I'd love to have a straight cut gear box, but they are so pricey! I thought they were mostly used in race car applications though.

If you want a first hand experience of a dog box, be at topspeed end of the month and i'll take you for a ride in my wagon.

Then AndrewTech must have put helicals in when the quiet ones wanted straights.

I think a lot of the noise has to do with the tooth profile more than anything. But with a dog box you have to take into consideration that you'll be breaking it down to replace synchro's and balk rings about every 15K or so.

yes, it's the tooth profile. the opposing teeth instantly meet across their entire face, which is what causes the noise. with a helical gear, it's a gradual engagement as they mesh together

Not sure where Owl Farm is but if near Coon Ass, then you can drive down before the meet and take it for spin. Will be at the end of month meet at Topspeed.

I have the Kaaz straight cut 1-3, helical 4 & 5th gear, billy shaft and selector forks. Andy will be doing a refresh here soon as my car will be going down for a new motor.

I know, but what I was getting at with a poor attempt, was the difference between the manufacturer's tooth profile in relation to noise.

Perfect example is a Pete Jackson gear drive timing setup. Two versions offered, both straight cut and one is louder than the other.

    owl farm location:

im in the process of upgrading my 2003 WRX. transmission mods are part of the plan. i have wanted to check out straight cut/dog boxes and similar setups..

WRX is a 'project' car/toy not DD. Must pass emissions (and i bet all of GA will be required to have emission inspections in the next 2 or 3 years) and be streetable but having a whine a bit is fine...

Isn't reverse straight cut, causing the whining?
