Anyone know how much it would cost to fix a 6MT with a bad 5th gear? This is what I was told was wrong with it.

"it needs 5th gear and 5th gear balk ring and a bearing"

    Thanks.

I thought you already picked up a 6mt...What are you up to eddie?

I would just price out the parts and take to Andy, I have yet to meet him but have only heard good things about him. If he hasn't done work on a 6mt this can be it.

Theres a lot of tools required to take apart and build a 6mt correctly. You better let will chime in on this one. The 6mt has a oil pump in it and if it sucked up chunks it could be a problem. Otherwise you could get it and put a 07 spec b gearset in it.

Rick, I have not gotten a 6MT yet. I am still looking and found one that has a blown 5th gear. The subaru tech that is selling it said what I posted above. I just want to know if it is worth me buying and fixing.

    whos the tech selling it?

I've done several of those...tools and being careful with the main case is key. I've also broken a few gears due to the immense pressure on the gear set. :unamused:

You can ship the trans to me and I can replace the syncro/gear and whatever else for ~$600 in labor+whatever parts you need.

It will have a 12month/12,000 mile parts/labor/workmanship warranty on it thru SOJAX as long as standard US available transmission parts are used. If you supply any non-US available parts, the warranty is 30 days on just the workmanship.

    What year Eddie?
06+ don't have the oil pump which is why they were cheaper new...or so I was told.

I'm fairly certain they all have the pumps

    2005.

6MT have oil pumps UNTIL the start of the last half of production for the US 2007MY. It is unknown when the oil pumps stopped going in other market's 6MT vehicles.

Apparently the oil pump hardware adds ~$1,000 to the cost of the 6MT and it was deemed no longer necessary in production as a simple oil bath was "good enough" and so far it seems like it was a fine idea. After all, 5MT's have had zero problems with bathing in oil for 30 years. *shrug*

What is interesting is that for 2008 the 6MT for STi no longer has a dipstick/fill tube...

this is what i heard. on nasioc, supposedly someone had the part number for the 07 with pump and there were a handful left in the US. as im looking at maybe buying a new 07 6mt i guess ill settle for a pumpless one..

as to the dipstick/fillstick my wrx was the first trans i have ever dealt with that had one. i had several trans in a 240z and it was a pain getting oil into the thing, sorta like filling the diff.

The pump equipped transmissions will be available for many years to come. You can still buy a brand new 1987 Leone RX/II transmission from SUBARU, they have some on hand.

The engine assemblies, some painted body parts and other "weird parts" for some reason become obsolete/inactive within a few years and you cant get those anymore. I still have not figured out their logic on it.

  12. I appreciate that, I am going to try and make it to one of the events so I can meet some of ya'll.

Yours is the same one as mine if you got my part number.....you have a pump. Remember the miniature pan on the bottom of the tranny that looked like a oil pan....your pump is in there.

how do you break a gear in the 6 speed, never mind 5th gear! 4th i could see but 5th?

I'd have all the syncros replaced because this box sounds beat.

    Nothing is unbreakable....flukes happen.

Negative. IIRC both of you guys had me look up the cheaper part number which has no pump.

The pan is still there regardless of pump or no pump and that only houses the SUMP for the pump, there or not.

The PUMP is in the back of the main case, behind the gear set but in front of the center diff and is driven off of the center diff.

W/out the pump, the housing is still there as the housing provides spacing/bearing support and shift rod support and control.

I dont know what...the guy that his 2nd was broken was missing one tooth. It was broken after it was towed to an impound lot. For some reason the guy gave his keys to the tow truck driver as it was being towed for illegal parking. Someone must have taken it for a joyride.

what is this 'Nothing' and where do I find it since it is unbreakable?

    Flukes?

    Right here!

Thanks for clarifying that Will. Thought mine had a pump because of the sump.

It isn't broke, just grinds a little when downshifting into 5th gear. I should have it by next week.

Yup. I've done several of those. "easy" once you find all the tools and setup the worktable for the gear set holder.

I remember lifting the work table off the ground trying to break that nut off the gear set!
