It's clutch time... Or should I put the $ into a 6-Speed Fund?

It's the OEM clutch at 300/340 wheel for 50K, and for the past few months at WOT below 4K it'll slip in any gear. It had been only in 5th, but now it's getting bad.

Foresters have a standard 5speed with a lower final ratio. Imagine a 6 speed minus 6th gear. :unamused: And no LSDs. I'm eventually going to get a 6 speed for extra durability, traction, and gearing. I'd really like to do a full 114.3 conversion, but I can't afford it.

So for now I'm thinking ACT Street and run this 5 speed until it explodes. Where should I order it and how much should I expect to pay? I'm going to put it in myself. What else should I do while I'm in there?

If it's too much $ I'll hold off and save for a 6 speed. I'd hate to buy a clutch and PP then have a gear crack next a month. But then, maybe I'll get another 50K from it?! Maybe it would be better to sell what I have and charge a 6 speed?

you on the stock pp and disk? too damn cheap to do the 5mt so I that would be my choice if funds are an issue and will take longer than you want to run a slipping clutch.
    I will help you out

  3. If your looking for a clutch I can hook you up. I am also direct with Spec, we have had really good luck with there clutches. ACT or Spec I will give you the lowest prices around. Everything is next day order.

I agree with you, don't fix it unless its broken, run the stocker tell she blows :)

    ACT > Spec

    In my experience anyway.

  5. Maybe back in the day, but not anymore...quite the opposite

I really think the OEM made by Exedy is a pretty darn good clutch. Heck Amonsta went 160k on his OEM Sti clutch! But I think you can find a horror story about any clutch on the market.

ACT over SPEC anyday and the owner of SPEC was my roommate in college! I just took out a SPEC clutch setup and replaced with an ACT and my car can go into gear now:)

I'm glad to hear some info on what to use, but I don't want to get into a pissing match about what's best. I've already chosen an ACT Street if I go with a clutch into my 5 speed. My questions were: how much for an ACT, should I, and what would you do?

I'd do an OEM style setup, but my goal is 350/400 and reliable enough to do One Lap in 2011. Since it's a Forester we'd be in the SUV class and looking at '09 I'm pretty sure I'd have a good shot at pissing someone off.

    PS- Rick is drinking.

    6 speed....

When you do One Lap I'm sure you will do well I know you can drive. I just wanted to do well in my class when we went then I realized that we had a chance of making it in the top ten...once you get to that point the class becomes secondary. I'm sure that you will be capable of running that well so don't set your sights on the class....set it on going top ten.

    whatever gave you that idea?
Missed the oem setup in your first post anyways just buy the clutch disk, I have 2 ACT pp's and that is what makes their kit so expensive the disk alone is a tad over 100.

Get rick's PP, King has an almost new fullface disk of mine that came from a 06+ WRX. That will easily hold 350-400whp. I wouldnt get a 6 puck with your power goals.

I like the way a nice 6 puck drives, I really don't like sprung hub disk. I always feel like I have better control with unsprung disk.

wow - to answer your question (and I'm drunk, per usual)

ACT 6 puck sprung, HD PP, throwout bearting, ~$500 shipped IIRC. Bought through TIC, who was MUCH (by $100) cheaper than any local dealer (who I would rather support), and only $10 more than BGs cost.

Like I said, can't remember the exact number, but find a better number than TIC and let me know, I'll use them next time.

I'd say go with the ACT Street. There's no need to run a 6 puck on a sub 400 hp car. 10k miles after I got my car the clutch went out and it had a spec clutch put in by the previous owner. I swapped in a cheap (XTD) 6 puck, and it lasted me 15k. When I did my swap I went with the ACT HD Street clutch kit and it's lasted me 20-30k miles on more power than what killed the previous 2 clutches and a ton of mountain runs and a few 5-6k rpm launches. I just pulled it off of my broken motor yesterday and it looked almost new. Highly recommend ACT for street use, I think I paid $360 for my kit shipped, Matt Ball can chime in because he ordered it for me when he was at Batlground.

When I swapped over to the six speed I was pleased with the way the short gears spooled up the 2.0 but I was bummed about how often I had to shift on an autocross course. The 6-speed is a nice piece of technology though.

However, after the swap I think that was the beginning of the end for my love of the WRX. I had to sort out all kinds of issues with the shifter assembly, the rear diff leaked fluid and whined and I had an issue with the drive shaft falling off of the car.

All of this could have been avoided if I didn't try and do it on the cheep but still I think that took the car too far for my comfort.

    Good luck

I've personally broken 2 exedy clutches on Subarus and they will not warranty them

spec clutches suck for subaru. ive had 3 or 4 bad dealings with spec clutches. ACT all the way or exedy.

My spec is bearable, but definitely not ideal

I think that I'm going to do an ACT Street and save up the money to do the 6 speed properly. If I did it soon I'd go with an '04, which isn't what I really want. I need to do a DCCD 114.3 swap to do it right. I'll probably get a salvage '05 donor.

    Thanks for the discussion!
