What I don't understand is, why would some games not even play without a PSN connection?

The information is incorrect. I have a brand new PS3 Slim 250GB and I received this error last week while playing BioShock 1: "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".

My brother has the same console and has been unable to connect to any MF2 server for the last two weeks or so. This somewhat explains that issue.

Hopefully it will be updated by the time I have free time to play again :)

Yeah, I got signed out in the middle of a MW2 game a few days ago. Yesterday I coudln't get in. Every time I clicked Find a Game it would just churn and never connect. BOO...
At least it isn't a RROD...

Scary... hope it is a recoverable error... It would suck to lose all your achievements (or whatever its called in PS3 world.. trophies?)

Trophies bro. And they pale in comparison to MS's Achievements :(

it's fixed. nothing more to see here. claimed it was a "time sync" error.

The internal clock on the PS3 thought 2010 was a leap year. So it displayed the date as 02/29/2010 which didn't match the dat on the PSN servers.

This mis-match caused the servers to not allow the conneciton.

Then why did I get my error prior to this Sony y2k moment?

IDK, it was originally reported that the internal date was being changed to 12/32/1999.
