I just did a compression test and the results are all over the place

    Cyl 1 175psi
    Cyl 2 175psi
    Cyl 3 190psi
    Cyl 4 145psi

Those numbers were taking just after the car was driven. I did it again this morning and the numbers were the exact same. I expected less being a cold motor but that was not the case.

Around 145 is what my gauge reads on a stock wrx/sti so I still have as much compression as a healthy stock motor but the difference between the high and low is way too much.

Not good but if it was the ringlands that were bad on #4 it would be somewhere between 90 and 120.

I never did a compression test after the break in period so it may have been that way since the beginning and the oil smoke I see may be from the turbo I just swapped in. It had quite a bit of shaft play.

Doesn't matter. Either way I am done with a Subaru as a daily driver.

Sorry to hear this bro, but at least we have the coupe to satisfy that subaru itch. Lets discuss options tomorrow as I have some idea's. ;)

So you're saying you are done with Subaru as a DD or done with a 500whp car as a DD?

I don't believe either of you.

I know. It is like the boy that cried wolf

Unfortunately I am really done. Now that I have the coupe to fulfill the need for speed I really don't need a 500hp daily driver.

I want something quite with enough power and handling to be fun. I'm not sure if that means taking my car closer to stock or a getting a different car.

My rv sold yesterday so that opens up quite a few options.

335i with Topspeed tune and LSD.....done and done.

Dunno how the 335i handles but my M3 is a track monster in the corners compared to my old Subaru.

Cheap and easy to maintain and can get 450 whp easily with bolt on mods.

I don't ike the styling of the Cadillacs and the BMWs are just too expensive.

I have always liked the older 2.7tt S4's but I'm sure at this point they are less reliable than a Subaru.

I have everything I need to put together a 2.0 for my car so I plan on doing that until I can figure out where I want to go next.

Used E46 M3's are getting very affordable but iirc you needed 4 doors.

Yep. I have 2 kids so 4 doors is a requirement.

Please don't take this the wrong way but maybe you just need to not open up the engine at all? Get a used longblock and drop it in. Done.

Sorry but I laughed at the reliability of Subaru versus Audi (2.7tt B5). If we all really cared about reliability and four doors we'd be driving Toyota Camry's. Hence my original reply -- Are you done with Subaru or done with 500whp daily drivers? I am not even remotely attempting to sway you to stay with a Subaru, but for the money and for a family man not much really compares (if you go Legacy like Eddie).

But Congrats on getting rid of it.

I'm still going to pay for an RV spot at Petit. We can talk about renting an RV, or setting up tents, at some point later on.

I did finally get to meet Joyce (the lady that's in charge of RV spots) and told
her I wanted a better spot this year.

As for another car, what about something like a SRT-8 300, or a 540, G8?

    E55 AMG, that's my plan

but yeah. renting an RV sounds like the way to go. however, if gordon and those other guys will be in that spot, it might be worth it in patron alone (and if they bring shelby again... :eek3: )

I have a 2.5 sitting on the engine stand in my garage ready to drop into a car. All I have to do is talk the current owner into letting it go.

Good compression, lowish mileage never cracked open? If so DO IT!

Ditch the big turbos, get a nice 20g and for reliability sake even ditch the meth.

Justin beat me to it...E55 AMG. Not sure on the maintenance costs and reliability, but it's a high powered stock car that's pretty luxurious to drive.

Kokopelli would be going through rear tires every 8-10K miles. It's a torque monster that has very little rear tire life.....and if he's complaining the 335i is too expensive then the E55 AMG isn't any better.

You should import a diesel from Europe and turbo it :)

  42. Cool_____

    Cool_____ Banned

    Isn't the diesel already turbo'd?

  43. Kokopelli

    Kokopelli Active Member

I took the turbo off and the exhaust housing was filled with oil which explains some if not all of the smoke but does not explain the low compression.

I checked the timing and everything looks ok but when I put it together last time there was a problem with the dowel pin on the 2/4 intake cam. If the gear spun on the cam a little it would still look like the timing was right but it could really be off .

    nope. not avcs.

v6 sti cams. If it is just the cam its about 350 for just the one :(

I need a leakdown tester. I really don't think its ringlands this time.

I just picked up a leakdown tester from good old harbor freight and it is messed up out of the box. The gauge reads 80% when its not even hooked up to anything :(

Does anybody local have one I can borrow?
