What does anybody think of this DIY Smoke machine (for finding vacuum leaks)

I think I'm gonna build one this weekend. Vacuum leaks are such a pain in the ass to find. I bet 90% of weird hestitation/idle issues are related to tiny vacuum leaks.

I found it on an E46 forum JBEUROTECH was the user who suggested it- seems pretty simple and brilliant even...

Not bad, I built one from HD parts but I did not include smoke. Although, you could certainly attach smoke to it. The larger bottom portion is intended to slide over the accordion and clamp down. All you need to do is loosen the clamp on one side of the accordion and rotate it up so that it will clear the fender.

How is that different? Is he not trying to pump smoke into the intake and see if anything comes out?

Alex how are you introducing the smoke with what you're showing in the pic? What are you using for smoke?

Ah I see what you mean now, I was using a smoke machine (sorry) and then capping it with the bit above to introduce pressure into the system.

you can use it to find boost leaks by tying in at the inlet tube, or turn the psi down and blow smoke around vac connections to check for leaks.

I was actually thinking of pressurizing 2-3psi into the inlet after the MAF using smoke without engine running. Then you'd see smoke coming OUT of the leak.

But I am certainly open to suggestions.

And I remember my B5 Audi actually had a european option where you get a "cooled" glovebox. I can imagine condensation from a chilled glovebox would be great for a car that already had dozens of electrical issues.

of course spraying a little carb cleaner around connections is cheaper too

In fact, you're more than welcome to borrow my tester if you'd like. Just listen for leaks and have soapy water on hand to spray suspected areas. Works like a champ!

Shoot me a pm and you can come get it this weekend.
