Ok, I know the title was pretty general, but I'm having a hard time tracking down a noise in the legacys suspension. I get a clunking over rough pavement, but no noise if I'm traveling over speed bumps. This should point to sway bar end links, correct?
Thanks. The strut tops are good; I think they may have even been replaced in the past 10 years sometime. I guess it's down to the sway bushings and end links. It only seems to do it over uneven pavement at low speeds, and I would expect the strut tops to make noise on any bump.
So for clarification's sake, the noise only occurs when one wheel is at a different height than the other, but not at the same time (as in a speed bump)? How are your endlinks looking?
Correct. I gave them a look the other day when I had the car on the lift and didn't see anything amiss other than slightly worn endlink bushings. They didn't make noise when I pulled on them and didn't look so damaged as to clunk either, though looks can be deceiving.
Endlinks can make noise if they are loose, but they can also bind and "pop" when they are over-torqued. Do you have stock or aftermarket links?
Have you found the issue? IMO it sounds more like a tophat issue. I would remove the bottom bolts from the endlinks and roll around, listening if you still get a "clunk".
