Hood Sanding..

Discussion in 'Modifications & DIY how-to' started by izzy_the_impressa, Jul 3, 2010.

  1. My hood has been chipping away clear-coat after hard rain.. Its spreading and infecting my entire hood. I think its about time to start getting it fixed and figured sanding it was the first step, however I've never done this type of work and don't wanna "F" things up... I feel confident that I can sand it myself but would like some help as to what type of sandpaper, electric sander/sanding by hand ok?... Then what about primering... and getting it painted.. I'm in Vinings GA btw.

    Cheers,

    Carter

cheaper, quicker, and easier to just get somebody else to prep and shoot it.

If you want to diy I'd imagine you'll want an orbital sander. You should sand down to the aluminum and polish it back out for a bling bling hood :)

I don't know much about painting other than what I was told by body guys and painters when we rented a room @ artcraft for jpm. Here's what they told me, "it's all about the prep and a clean paint booth".

Well Alex if he wanted to go with a bling bling polished hood then I would recommend to have it soda blasted as that will leave a very nice smooth finish to polish out or better yet to have it anodized.

Granted for me it's hard not to be a smart ass but sometimes that's just confused with being honest at times. Besides when's the last time you saw a polished or anodized hood on a Suby?

On a more serious note, in order to do the hood correct you are looking at quite a bit of money to buy what you would need to do this job. The expense may well be the same as just going to a shop and having it repaired.

I agree. I'd pay Artcraft (located in Smyrna and close to the OP) and have them take a look at your hood. Even if you decide against paying to have it professionally repaired you will have an idea of the cost. Be sure to let them know you are a community member and that I sent you.

  9. Awesome. I definitely don't have the tools or the funds for tools... Ill check out that shop by me then.

    Cheers

First check with a shop and get pricing on re-clearing the hood, and them ask them how much if you have already sanded the hood. If price difference isn't huge then it's not worth the trouble. Most shops will re-clear the hood for $100-$150.

Any tips on shops in the Lawrencville/Duluth area?

No, not really. However, I am a firm believer that a good body shop w/ a good paint shop is hard to come by and worth the drive :)

WRXAtlanta members should receive a discount when using Artcraft.

My CF hood was chipping clear off in chunks. Every shop i took it too didn't want to touch it. I finally found some time and sanded it down myself. 400-600-800grit. LOTS of elbow grease. Dropped it off to get it re cleared, and it looks spanking new.

It's all in prep work. I didn't touch my CF scoop and just handed it to them and it looks like shit...go figure lol.
