Hey all I have a sti V3 Transmission --- Im trying to find someone who can upgrade it to handle upto 450-500 hp I dont intend on launching or beating it- If anyone knows where to go, or if you can do it, let me know price for the build including removal and installation debit card ready to go my final ratio is 4.44
If I was going to have one built I would send it to Andrewtech. I built my last one and it worked perfectly but I would never do it again. Pricing for a built tranny is way to close to the price for a 6 speed swap.
Funny thing is M-factory is now making us a premier distributor and installation shop. I guess the transmissions that were built by some of the other shops had some issues, where as the ones that Andy built had zero issues. If you call them, they will tell you to look up Andy There are also some new M-Factory pro gears that are just out of testing. They are going to go for around $3200 for 1-4 and should rival the PPG gears. Andy has built both PPG transmissions as well as M-Factory transmissions and said that he actually preferred the craftsmanship of the M-Factory gears over the PPG gears. As for price on their street gears, the price is around $2500 for the gears. I would have to double check, but there are only 3 more sets available and they are switching to the pro-gears which are a little more heavy duty and have more of a drag ratio as opposed to the close ratio street sets they had previously. As Matt stated, you could probably get a used 6 speed and most of the components for the cost of building a 5 speed. But if you are interested in referrals, Kokopelli has had multiple different transmissions (for multiple different cars from Stock to PPG) built by Andy. Send him a PM and see what he thinks. But I really like the 5 speed ratios.
Give me a call at the shop I can get you a brand new 6 speed for what you pay for most used setups. Matt
I would do a 6 speed over ANY 5 speed for the price. Built 5 speeds are more expensive, no front LSD, no DCCD, and still in a crappy case.
that's funny, I have a built 5-spd with a front LSD diff and paid way less than what a 6-spd swap would cost.
Aren't you special. Was yours already built/used? That's the only exception. And yours is....dog box right? Heh rebuilds every 15K miles or so.
How many people have actually BROKEN an R160 rear diff at 300Whp? 400whp? 500whp? Just curious as it seems the R160 is pretty stout even if it's not as strong as the R180. A complete 6 speed swap INSTALLED has to be what?.. $4500 and that's if you got a firesale deal on the donor. Plus even if you find a donor it's still a buyer beware used tranny, right? I know the 6 speed is basically bullet proof TQ wise- just trying to convince myself a used 6 speed with no knowledge of how it was abused is "better" than a properly built PPG or Mfactory 5 speed.
I've broken 2 R160 rear diffs on 2.0L and 350 hp. And the 6 speed BRAND spanking new for me and Rick was I believe $3700.
I was lucky with mine, the previous owner had a fresh rebuild done and the shop sent me pics of the case split and comparisons of the new and old synchro's and balk rings.
Been out of work since Feb, guess you didn't "hear" about that, and have been steadily working on the car and truck almost every day. Unlike our resident broken muslim I not on the government dole to pay for parts either.
Here is the deal. You can get a 5 speed built and installed for about the same as a used 6 speed swap. A new 6 speed swap, forget it. I do believe that the 6 speed is a better design, however the ratios are not the best for a lot of applications. If you want to drag race, the 6 speed is actually a bit of a liability in comparison to the 5 speed because if you have a fast car you are going to have to shift into 5th in order to finish the 1/4 mile. I chose to do a 6 speed swap in my personal car as I got the 6 speed (in pieces) for $1000 and should be able to get everything I need to get it rebuilt for around $500 in parts cost. If one were to find a deal like that and had Andy rebuild the 6 speed, you can come out cheaper than a built 5 speed. But also consider the labor to change out the ring and pinion or swap the rear hubs and differential. It all comes pretty close. But if you start with a $3700 transmission and then have to do axle, rear end (or swap the 160 R&P), hubs, pay labor to install all of those parts....you are looking at a good bit more than the built 5 speed. Is the 6 speed a better design? I think so, but at the same time, the gear ratios are not the best thing for all applications. I think it really comes down to what you are looking for. As for the R160 rear end...there are several people out there right now with 600+ AWHP that are still using the R160. It can be done if one is easier on the car. But then again there have been a couple members on here with stock 5 speeds that held 500+. But unless you are really easy on the car, things are going to start breaking.
If you get an 06-07 6 speed all you need is the shifter linkage and an auto/sti driveshaft. Then it's a direct swap and cheaper than 5 speed. But that only pertains to the 02-05 WRX.
Only if you use the R160 which you seem to think will blow up at 350 hp And even then, we have gears currently that we could have installed in the car for around $3400 out the door which is cheaper than the cost alone of the 6 speed, not even COUNTING labor to get the 6 speed installed. I do admit though, there are only 3 more sets of these gears. After that the price will go up by around $800-$1000.
Idiot I had R160 in my car at 530 hp and clocked 10.3. I never said they blow up at 350 hp. I said I blew 2 up at 350hp and 500+ drag passes. And still no Front LSD or DCCD control on the M Factory gears..........
Idiot? Really? No need to resort to name calling. Seems like right here you said you broke 2 R160's at 350hp. Maybe I misunderstood? But you are correct in one thing, no front LSD or DCCD. Regardless I am not trying to get into an argument, just trying to get the information out there so the customers can make a more informed decision.
I got my 6-speed for $850 shipped to me. I had to get Andy to fix it but I came out in the $2k ballpark for my 6speed swap. If you are patient, you can find the deals. and Coolrex, there was no need to call Mike an idiot....take it easy man...not everyone is out to put you down like you always tend to believe.
I was trying to say I've broken two at 350 hp not that 350 'will' break it. It was a figure of speech when I typed idiot. He misunderstood what I was trying to say but I didn't type it in well either......you idiot. Oh and I'm not a mod so yeah get pissy about that. :wiggle::wiggle::wiggle::rofl::rofl::rofl:
Well since the 5 speed would be apart it's easy to add in LSD and the OBX is cheap and seems to be working well for Koko from what he told me.
LOL, I think we all misunderstood because it reads you calling Mike an idiot to me. If someone called you an idiot for no good reason I would of done the same for you....now if it was a mod, forget about it
