I have to get a new set of tires soon. I will get 245/40/17's but am unsure what I should go with...trying to keep under 125 a tire so there are a few choices. Seems like discounttiredirect.com is the cheapest out there any other places I should look? What do you suggest for aggressive daily driving and maybe an occasional mountain run in this price range? anyone have the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110's? I had the ventus sport K104's on the mustang and loved them...
I have the K110's. I have been very happy with them. I have them on the STI and they are 245/40/18's. They even did really well in the snow this past winter. I intend to get another set. Who are you going to have do the mount and balance? I would just goto a Discount Tire store and get it all done there. You can order in the store or order at www.discounttire.com. The website will let you pick the tire and location you want to have it done.
Yoko S-Drives...been seeing good reviews on them lately. I haven't tried them yet but will get some on my stockers. They should be in that price range.
Kuhmo Ecsta SPTs treated me nicely for the price. Just don't you dare go on a road course with them! :rofl:
honestly I have not even looked at the prices of the re11's just figured they cost too much. Especially when I got 2 sets of re01r's for 820 on sale, hard to fork out for the good stuff unless its on sale. lol I am such a cheap ass!
they're around $200 each for the RE-11 in the size you're looking for. the Dunlop Direzza1 Star Spec is substantially less and equally as good.
Agreed The SPT's are easily the best bang for buck tire out of the group. Good feed back, good wet and dry handling, good braking. If you didnt like the SPT's chances are you have something screwy with your set-up or comparing to a tire not in its category. Ok, so the whole tire selection thing broken down. -Want ~25+k miles out of set of tire(probably more, depending on how aggressively driven and alignment, tire pressue...blah, blah, blah), good wet performance, decently quiet, and rides pretty good all while being a bargain tire? If yes, your main contender is the SPT. Others to consider for similar use are the fuzion ZRi, General exclaim UHP, Firehawk Wide Ovals, Yoko S-drives, and the Falken FK452 among others. Quite frankly, the SPT outperforms almost all of them from a performance stand point and will most likely be a fair amount less expensive then the others depending on your size, -Want ~15k miles out of a set, want higher cornering and braking capabilities, dont mind the extra road noise, little worse of a ride, some extra cost but not to much? -If yes, your only two big contenders are the Star Specs the Khumo XS. In this case the XS has been outperforming the Star Specs by a decent margin in all the recent Grassroots motorsports tire tests, and again will probably end up costing less. My personal opinion from your description of what you are looking for? Let me first preface by explaining that besides what i have read, i have owned the ZRi's, Wideovals, Fk452's, and the SPT's as well as others. Also a plethora of summer tires but neither of the ones mentioned here. So with that out of the way, I think tire category #1 is the way to go. You will most likely NEVER be maxing grip of the tire driving on the street or mountain runs, and even then a tire such as an SPT will not be holding you back. I ran a set of 225 width SPT's in the wet at my last Little Tally track day, I ran a 1:14.6 with the wipers WOT. The only other car out there faster then me was a bolt-on and cammed evo with full tread depth 255 width Star Specs, he ran a 1:14.3. I was extremely impressed with the track performance of the SPT's. For reference, my fastest dry time with re070's out there is a 1:11.0, im confident i could go mid 1:12's on the SPTs in the dry. Is 1.5 seconds of performance worth $200 extra for a set of summer tire that have to be replaced twice a quickly? That depends SO, IMO, save some money and have a great capable tire that wont hold you back(unless for some reason you find a mountain road that has been closed to traffic), that also happens to be a great wet performer and will last a while. My recent set of DD tires are SPT's, and at less then $100 a tire for my 18"s, its going to be hard to find a tire that can outperform it for less. I plan on buying another set in the next 10k. Buttt, we are car people, and our vice is cool car shit weather we need it or not, so i completely understand if the Star Specs or SX's get ordered, badass tires for sure and there are infinitely worse ways to spend the extra cash(few better ways to, but you get the point).
By aggressive driving Rick means drifting and sliding around in full parking decks so he needs all the grip he can get. Pay the money for some good tires. Find a set of RE01R's if you can or RE11's. Dunlop Direzza's are raved about on Nasioc but I know nothing about them. Trust me when I say to not go cheap....I did and every tire SUCKED and lived a short life on something that will see aggressive driving and decent power.
Does your car weigh sub 2000 lbs? As much as I love Andy's tire testing it doesn't correlate across the board for every car, especially comparing Andy's testing on a sub 2000 lb Civic to a 3200 WRX. The Kumho XS does not like cold hence Andy does not use them for competition. At the end of the day the Dunlop Star Spec, Toyo R1R, Yoko AD08 and Hankook RS3s are all really good ultra-performance tires, it comes down to your budget and preference.

I agree, doesnt correlate to every car or every drivetrain for that matter. I suggested the two tires i did because of his budget(they are the two cheapest ultra's) and the fact that they are both great tires. In attempt to help him choose between the two, i simply mentioned that the xs has been performing well in recent tests that i have read in GRM and the XS will leave alot of padding left in his wallet compared to the rest. Anyways, seems irrelevant because all the advice in this thread seemed to have fallen of deaf ears.
I have listened but have yet to see anything to make me want to give up the K110's. the kumho you mentioned getting 25K+ is NOT a grippy enough tire for me. Such a tire should last around 10K if that as did my dunlop sport maxx and the Hankooks K104's on the stang. I have had many say they did not like this particular tire on our cars... Meredith had some good options really like the RS3 but its either 225 or 255 in 17" and the 225/45 are taller than 245/40 so I would rather stay with this size as this is going on the coupe. 255's will require me to cut the fenders which I am not ready to do.

all but one person did not like the S drives. I guess my only complaint with hankook's are the lack of feedback. they don't scream when they are at the limit but on the street I shouldn't find the limit but probably will.

If you can only make a 280 tread wear tire last 10k miles then both the SPT and sdrives wouldnt last much longer then that anyways. The sdrive are in the size you need though. I dont know anything about the k110's.
IIRC The Hankook RS3 is just as cheap (if not cheaper) than the XS and I know it's cheaper than the Dunlop, AD08 and Toyo. However the RS3 suffers from size and availability issues from time to time...
Wanted to bump this back up as I am thouroughly impressed with the Hankooks! Having 2 swapped coupe's with 245's in 17's, I can honestly say the HIGH dollar RE01R's (at the time) ain't worth crap compared to these hankooks. Granted I have yet to put 1000mi on them but, on my 3 back to back drives in both cars on the same loop. I felt MUCH MUCH more stable with the hankooks vs. the re01r's.
since he's comparing it to the RE-01R, I'm going to assume he ordered the RS-3. I had a set of RS-2's as track/auto-x tires and they were awesome. Not as good as the RE-11's I had, but definitely worth the price.
Ah, that is what I run. I have been very happy with mine. I have about 30K miles on them and they are still going strong.
If I can get 10K I will be happy. -2.5 frt and gonna try to get that in the rear friday. the front is planted like I have never felt before.
I have them on the car now and have had the S-Drives. S-Drives absolutely suck compared to the Hankook's.
tad noisy on the hwy but really that is just me being really REALLY trying to find something wrong with this tire. Shit the 225/40 being < 100 ea is just one hell of a tire for the price.
